And more in legal news …
Last week, Salem City Council moved to temporarily suspend issuing new fortune-telling licenses. They want time to close a loophole in the existing ordinance.
According to the present law, in order to qualify for a fortune-telling license, 51 percent of a shop must be dedicated to the metaphysical, for instance tarot cards, crystals and the like.
But apparently, that’s not what’s been happening.
Councilor-at-large Joan Lovely says she herself is aware of two businesses that created separate corporations within the same establishment in order to get around the license requirements.
To stop this from happening, Lovely asked for the suspension of license issuance to allow the city solicitor time to recommend changes. She received unanimous support of the council.
None of them want too many fortune-telling business in town, but they’re also aware of how important they are to Salem.
Council expects to consider the proposed amendments at their first meeting in September. They’d like to settle the issue before October’s witchy season begins.

Physically things will likely be pretty good today. You’re probably feeling strong and have enough of everything that you really need. You might even have more than enough and can give some away.
If you do, take advantage of this period to be generous. You’ve done wonderfully in building your world, see if you can help someone else do the same.
Prosperity and stability are highlighted. Enjoy the fruits of your labour. It’s been your steady steps and sometimes less than exciting work that has brought you to where you are. Congratulations, this is what the work was for.

Seal of Cook County
It’s now legal to juggle, perform acrobatic feats, and read fortunes in Cook County, Illinois’ Forest Preserve.
The Forest Preserve commissioners took time out last week to clean up some of the old, and possibly illegal, ordinances they still had on the books.
According to Dennis White, attorney for the County, the rules against juggling and acrobatics were probably instituted to discourage carnivals or circuses from setting up in the preserve.
If that’s true, I’d guess that’s also why fortune-telling was banned. But the decision to lift the ban had nothing to do with circuses.
According to one of the commissioners, that was done because the ordinance didn’t define what fortune-telling is.
So it’s now okay to juggle, somersault, and divine at the preserve. But take note, it’s still illegal to go naked on its driving range and golf course.

The Moon moves into Pisces today, and stays there until Wednesday.
Described in Tarot cards, this transit would be like the High Priestess is dressed as the Moon.
She’s lost her material body and has disappeared into the celestial body that usually rests at her feet.
The Moon in Pisces, or High Priestess dressed as the Moon, is a time of increased perception, ill-defined understanding and what might be described as night vision.
During this time you could find your dreams feel more real than your daylight hours and what’s not said is louder than what is.
Fears might grow like a boogieman under the bed, but if you just take a peek, they’re as likely to be dust bunnies as demons or ghosts.
Be still, aware and fearless. It might be dark outside, but if there was ever a time you can navigate the unknown, this is it. Listen, breathe, flow.

The Tarot by Robert Place
If you haven’t read it yet, definitely take a look at The Tarot: History, Symbolism and Divination by Robert M. Place.
It’s been out since 2005, but I finally read it last week and it’s amazing. I might even say it’s the best Tarot history book I’ve read to date.
To understand the origins of the Tarot, it’s important to understand the European culture from which it grew. Renaissance art, alchemy, hermeticism, neoplatonism – it’s all part of the story, and Place tells it very well.
He takes us card by card through the Major Arcana of the Tarot of Marseilles, explaining the symbols and why they may have been chosen.
As the ‘blueprint’ to all occult decks to follow, understanding the symbols in the Marseilles is vital to understanding how the ideas in the later decks developed.
Ultimately, Place’s focus is on the Waite-Smith Tarot, designed by Arthur E. Waite and painted by Pamela Colman Smith.
He looks at all 78 cards in the deck, and as an added bonus, offers some tips on how to use them. There are exercises, spreads and a summary of the six patterns found most often in readings. All very useful.
It’s a fantastic book for new readers, and old, and anyone who’s interested in Renaissance art, history or philosophy. It left me wanting to learn more.
And fortunately, Place hasn’t stopped teaching. He’s just published a new book called The Fool’s Journey: The History, Art, and Symbolism of the Tarot, based on The Fool’s Journey, his 2010 Tarot exhibition at the LA Craft and Folk Art Museum.
I can’t wait to read it.

New energy and general enthusiasm are your gifts for today. It’s time to start moving towards your dreams.
It might be just the beginning, but you have to start somewhere and you have the energy and passion to do it right now. Why wait?
Look into your heart and see what makes it stand up and sing. That’s the sign that you’re on the right track.
Be fearless and fun and see where it takes you.

I wish I could post it on my site. In fact, I wish I could hang it in my house. But all I can do is point you all to this wonderful painting by Celeste Dupuy-Spencer called Tarot Reading.
It’s amazing, and looks like so many readings I’ve been part of. I’d like to know what deck they’re using.
And what about that blue-faced figure behind the reader? Is it a painting within a painting, or a spooky spirit helping or haunting the reading?
If you want to see this piece in person, it’s part of the gender bending exhibition Leidy Celeste Nicole at Museum 52 in New York City. The show runs until July 30th.
Looks good.

Waiting and watching will probably be a bit of a preoccupation today. You’ve begun the process and have done all you can for the moment.
This might be a good time to review the steps you’ve taken so far. Make sure that you’ve got yourself balanced before the real journey begins.
Virtue is likely to be a key concept. Virtue here means being true to yourself within and between all your layers – mind, body and spirit.
Are your emotions in line with your thinking? Are you acting in a way that accurately reflects you’re beliefs and feelings? Explore these questions and relax. Your ship will arrive soon.

The Empress
If you’re in the Montreal area, or heading to it, you might want to check out this art show.
Le Tarot de Montréal is an exhibition inspired by the Tarot de Marseille. Twenty-three artists participated, each creating a work on paper depicting their view of a specific symbol from the Tarot card given to them.
The artists and cards were paired based on the analogies and associations in the cards and the artistic approach of each particular artist.
The show opens tonight and runs to August 18, Mondays through Fridays, at the Peter B. Yeomans Cultural Centre in Dorval, Québec.
It’s being presented by the Centre d’art et de diffusion Clark in collaboration with the Conseil des Arts de Montréal en Tournée.
