Black Cats are Lucky

Carl preparing for Halloween

For Halloween this year, my Black Cat Carl asked that I do a little piece on, what else, Black Cats. So we took some photos and I sat down to write.

First let’s get this straight, black cats are good luck, not bad. Unlike Europeans and North Americans, the Japanese know this and consider it an auspicious sign when a black cat crosses their path.

The ancient Egyptians had it right as well. They saw it as a capital crime to kill a black cat. And the ancient Greeks too, they knew the truth. It’s been said that the goddess of the hunt, Artemis, was known to switch into her black cat disguise when she went undercover.

It was the Romans who introduced black cats to Europe and it was there that they ran into some trouble. Around the 17th century people started associating them with witchcraft. Feared as shape-shifters, witches’ familiars and messengers of the devil, many were killed in the ridiculous belief that they were evil.

Fortunately, we know better now. Sure they have crazy eyes that float around in the dark, but they look fantastic beside a pumpkin. And at least in my own case, having a black cat in the house feels really lucky.

Happy Halloween Everybody!

#17 – The Star
Happy Halloween

Optimism and rejuvenation are the themes for the day. Active generosity and compassion come easy so don’t hold back. Give and you will receive. Embrace the Universe’s capacity to provide you with what you need when you need it most. That’s what miracles are and the Star is the goddess of miracles.

If things have been tough lately, now’s a time when you can finally lean back and take a bit of a break. Surround yourself with as much beauty as you can. It will help to replenish your soul. Art, music, and the glory of the night sky are all worthy subjects of meditation. Let them fill you with the inspiration you need for the next leg of your journey.

#14 – Temperance

This is a great day to even things out. Balance and temperance are the energies surrounding you now. Can you bring your physical world into harmony with your emotional state? Temperance is about that perfect mix, neither too much nor too little. It’s about becoming conscious of what you want to be both inside and out and courageous enough to try to be that.

You are responsible for any healing you might need. The first step is to acknowledge what might be out of balance and then start readjusting. Sometimes it’s about finding a new way to meld your internal opposites; sometimes it’s about casting out what no longer works. In all cases though, it’s about being true to your self and connecting to the grander universe.

Try asking an angel for some help today. You might be surprised at the result.

Ace of Disk

Start that new project now! I know it’s just the beginning and you can hardly see how it’s going to manifest, but manifest it will. The Ace of Disks is the seed that begins all new physical realities.

Is it a new job? A novel approach to an old one? Trying to get a project off the ground? Starting a new workout or eating regime? It doesn’t matter if you don’t have all the details yet. What’s important right now is to start working. Do it with the confidence that it’s going to succeed – in the real world.

All great trips require a first step. This is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. Take the step and start your journey to prosperity.

A Parrot I Met

Our beloved Paul the Octopus has passed, but there are other psychic animals out there ready to read on demand.

Katy Perry and Russell Brand had one at their Indian wedding the other day. An unnamed fortune-telling parrot with his Guru human friend read cards for the newlyweds and their guests.

Happily, the pretty polly predicted long life, happy marriage and long successful careers for both bride and groom. I wish them that too. And I’d like to get that parrot on Beyond Worlds.

Page of Cups

Sweetness abounds when the page of cups is around.  This is a great day to communicate emotions – enthusiastically and without censor, especially to those you love.  There’s a lightness in the air and the sense that something new could be starting.  And it just might be.

It’s good to remember though, that there’s no need for you to commit to anything serious right now.  It’s still the time of freshness and beginnings.  Becoming heavy now would only dampen what’s still just growing.

Express yourself and let your imagination wander.

Thousands Of Books For Free

October 27th, 2010 § 2 comments § permalink

Check out this website –> forgottenbooks.org.

There are thousands of books for you to download, absolutely free. You won’t find anything new there. All the titles are part of the Public Domain. But it’s actually the ‘old’ nature of these books that is so attractive.

The Tarot: It's Occult Significance, Use In Fortune-Telling, Method of Play, Etc. by Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers

The Tarot

Maybe I could find affordable original copies of Ouspensky’s The Symbolism of the Tarot (1913) or Foli’s Fortune-Telling By Cards (1915) in an old book store, on Amazon or at eBay. But here they’re at my fingertips – for free!! No shipping charges.

In a few short minutes, I downloaded The Tarot (1888) by MacGregor Mathers, Thierens’ General Book of the Tarot (1930), and Alchemy, The Turba Philosophorum by Arthur Edward Waite. It’s extraordinary.

You can become a member of the site for a one-time charge of either $49 or $69. With that you get ‘clean’ downloads. It’s not a problem for me, but the free pdf’s have a line running through them and are a little splotchier than the members’ downloads. But don’t worry, they’re very readable.

Also, if you’d prefer reading a book with a cover, they’ll print one up for you at a very nominal fee. I actually discovered them by ordering one of their books from Amazon.

This sounds like an ad I know, but it’s really just an unsolicited endorsement of a fabulous site (and idea). I’ve already downloaded six books from them for free. If after I read them, I feel like I must own a hardcopy, I’ll get one. But really … this is just great!!!

And though they have a huge metaphysical section, that’s not all. They also have classical fiction, art, philosophy, science, religion, folklore, mythology and sacred texts.

Visit forgottenbooks.org today and get reading!!

"The Tarot Is Not To Be Played With"

October 27th, 2010 § 0 comments § permalink

Who knew that Anthony Burgess, author of A Clockwork Orange, was crazy for Tarot? I didn’t.

I just got Mary K. Greer’s latest blog update (if you’re not subscribing to her blog yet – do it now) and she’s written about a BBC broadcast of Burgess’ short story Chance Would Be A Fine Thing. The story is about a not-so-wise woman who looks to the cards for some gambling advice. And it’s fabulous!!

Burgess himself designed a Tarot deck and was apparently fascinated by prediction. His biographer, Andrew Biswell describes him as having, “had a strong interest in horoscopes, tarot cards and predictive dreams.” In volume two of his autobiography, he claimed to have predicted Kennedy’s assassination a year before it happened.

This cautionary Tarot tale is brilliantly read by John Sessions. It’s only 20 minutes long, but don’t wait to listen. It’s only going to be available till this Friday, October 29th. After that it’ll disappear till 2013 when we can see it again in the Collected Short Stories Biswell is editing.

Go listen now!

Queen of Swords from Georgie's Deck

Queen of Swords

Queen of Swords

The truth is an important commodity to you right now.  Getting through the fog and cutting out that which no longer works is priority.  You might be feeling a little hardcore, a little less sympathetic to sob stories and other tales of woe than usual.  That’s alright.  Sometimes it’s more important to be clear than sweet.

Get the job done and do it with the determination, diligence and discernment that you expect from others.  Keep in mind though that the bigger picture includes compassion.  You need not be cruel or mean to be truthful and serious.  Not everyone is as tough-skinned as you are right now, so be aware of the potential effect your words might have.

Where am I?
