Moon in Taurus – High Priestess in the Hierophant's Clothing

The High Priestess dressed as the Hierophant

High Priestess in Hierophant's Clothes

The Moon moves into Taurus today and stays there until Monday.

If you look at this transit through the eyes of the Tarot, it would be like the High Priestess is dressed as the Hierophant. She’s sitting before two acolytes and sharing the secrets she usually guards.

The Moon in Taurus, or High Priestess in the Hierophant’s clothes, is a time of spiritual and emotional certitude.

There’s a sense that the truth can be explained, understood and incorporated into daily life. Rules can and should be followed.

Instead of trying to force others to recognize what you know to be certain, try using this time to simply share your emotional, intellectual and spiritual perceptions.

Celebrate the diversity of spirit in our world, while figuring out for yourself what rules, spiritual or otherwise, work best for you.

4 of Cups

Today it might seem like you’ve got it all, and yet there’s still something missing.  Emotionally, you’ve got plenty of support.

People around you love you and you love them back.  Despite it all though, there’s a nagging feeling that it’s just not enough.

Perhaps you’re fantasizing about a new love, a new friend, or at a new spark to make what you’ve already got even more special.

Examine these feelings carefully and determine what it is that leaves you slightly unsatisfied.  Are you being reasonable – or a bit of a brat.  Pay attention to what you’ve got and don’t forget to give thanks.

At the same time – if there is something missing, it’s missing and there’s no getting around it.  Meditate on what it is that leaves you wanting more and figure out whether or not it’s something you should pursue.

Remember though, what you wish for might just appear out of thin air – make sure you really want it?

Fortune-telling Now Legal in Meridian, Mississippi

August 18th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

The saga continues … Meridian, Mississippi has changed their minds again. Fortune-telling is now legal.

City council voted 3-1 on Tuesday in favour of rescinding the longstanding, and hotly debated ban on fortune-telling in the city.

Threats of legal action by the American Civil Liberties Union prompted the change of heart. A lawsuit would be expensive, and the city would likely lose on constitutional grounds.

But not all councillors were convinced, and psychic readers won’t be able to set up shop just anywhere in Meridian.

Though such businesses are now legal, according to the Sun Herald, business zoning classifications for where they’ll be allowed will be highly restrictive.

#7 The Chario

#7 – The Chariot

Today you’ll likely see some movement. The Chariot is the card of change, the card that takes you places.  Having finally determined the direction you’d like to go, now is the time to get cracking and go there.

Changing jobs, moving house or some sort of travel are the larger manifestations of the Chariot energy.  Sometimes though, it might bring no more than a strong desire to redecorate your living room or go for a long drive.

However it plays out, try not to give up if the going gets a little tough.  More often then not, just sticking it out and playing for real is all it takes to ensure victory.  You’ve come this far already, why would you give up now?

The Judgement Card, and Pulling Again When You Don't Like the First

The Judgement Card from Sascha Raeburn on Vimeo

I like that this short film by Sascha Raeburn is about Tarot, or at least that the Tarot is a main focus. But I’m not sure why the characters in the story are so horrified by the Judgement card.

In the skit, two girls are asking about the relationship prospects for one of them. It’s clear that they’ve pulled some cards on the topic already and got Judgement twice. They see it as a terrible card and want to try again.

Of course, they get Judgement a third time and it creeps them out. They decide they’ve had enough and pack up, ending the movie.

#20 Judgment from the Rider Waite Smith Tarot

#20 Judgement

It’s true that Judgement isn’t the most romantic card, and wouldn’t at first glance be what a young girl might hope for when asking about love, what with the gray bodies rising from their coffins and all.

But as the penultimate card in the major arcana, Judgement suggests that there’s probably something significant about the relationship in question that might be worth exploring.

A major cycle is ending and a movement to a new phase or dimension is about to take place. From a relationship perspective, this could mean that their union might be an awakening of sorts, a call to pay attention.

Together, they could come to see life from a new perspective, leaving their old ways of behaving and stale perceptions about relationships behind.

It could also suggest that the girl asking the question is on the verge of something exciting herself, some sort of major life change, and that she’s projecting these feelings onto the boy she has a crush on.

But of course this is a film and how the director wants to interpret a card in their own story is completely up to them. What’s perhaps more interesting than the card they drew and what it might mean to me, is how the characters reacted to a card they didn’t like.

What they did was pretty common in real life readings, especially for people new to Tarot – ask a question, get a card, reject it at first glance, and pull again right away.

However tempting it might be, pulling more cards, hoping for a ‘better’ one with the next draw isn’t particularly worthwhile.

It’s kind of like asking a friend for advice, looking at them without listening as they answer, then asking them the same question again immediately after they finish responding.

If this is something you find yourself doing, slow down and try staying with that first card you get, even if it doesn’t look like it makes sense. With a little contemplation it’s likely to become clear soon enough.

And if you do keep pulling and the same card keeps appearing, don’t just shove it back into the deck and carry on. If you bothered to ask the Tarot in the first place, don’t you want to know what it has to say, especially when it’s shouting?

Moon in Aries – High Priestess in the Emperor's Clothing

High Priestess dressed as the Emperor

High Priestess dressed as Emperor

The Moon moves into Aries today and will stay there until Friday.

Translating this transit into Tarot Cards, it would be like the High Priestess is wearing the Emperor’s clothing. She’s in scarlet and armor and is ready for battle.

The Moon in Aries, or High Priestess in the clothing of the Emperor, is a time of intensified emotions. You might feel an increased desire to shape your own world.

Rather than sitting back in stillness, this transit encourages the loosening of emotional restrictions and the conscious expression of enthusiasm and/or passion.

It might be uncomfortable at first, but allow yourself to speak out loud. Take steps forward to let people know what you know and what you love.

Try to remain objective and open-minded while acting with determination and direction. It might sound impossible, but you can do both if you try.

Page of Disks

It’s time to get down to the details.  A new project is in the works and you’ve got the task of making it happen – or at least starting the process off.

Keep the reason you’re doing it in mind – that’s the fire that drives the whole enterprise.

If the less than exciting details are getting you down, remember that it’s the details that build the foundation to any project.

Don’t be afraid to sludge and trudge on through.  It’ll be worth it in the end.

Our Lady of Fatima

August 16th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

I went out this past weekend with my camera intending to shoot an historic building that’s going to be torn down next month. Instead, I ran into a Tarot Parade.

Well, it wasn’t actually a Tarot parade, but a parade in honour of Our Lady of Fatima. It’s a Portuguese Catholic celebration, and though it’s not at all Tarot related, a lot of characters in it seemed to have jumped right out of my Tarot deck.

Our Lady of Fatima herself, the Virgin Mary as she appeared in an apparition to three children in Fatima, Portugal in 1917, has always reminded me of the High Priestess.

Our Lady of Fatima

There’s a plaque of her beside my front door. For me it’s been like the Priestess is blessing the house. I like it.

But it wasn’t only the High Priestess on parade, the Lovers were there too, and the Empress, the Page of Swords, the Princess of Cups, and even a young Hierophant holding his keys.

Faith, Hope and Charity made an appearance, bringing to mind the Three of Cups. And the Hermit was represented by St. Francis.

Leading Our Lady were the three children who saw her on the hill in Fatima. The little boy looks an awful lot like a tiny Tarot Fool.

It was a wonderful event. I was lucky to have happened by.

2 of Wands

This is a day for looking forward.  You’ve got some time and you’re in a good position to look around and see what you want to do next.  The world is literally in your hands and it’s up to you to decide the next move.

What is it that makes you feel most in control of your domain?  What is it that makes you feel you’re really doing what you’re supposed to be doing?

Don’t rush this – it takes some serious consideration.  Use this time to start getting a grip on your destiny.  You’re in charge of this one.  Don’t be afraid to take control.  Your option is to let someone else.

The Incidental Tarot

August 15th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

The Incidental Tarot grew out of a writing project, the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) where participants commit to writing a 175 page novel within the 30 days of November.

Having successfully completed a 30 day novel last year, Holly DeFount was so inspired that she decided she wanted to try the same type of thing with her visual art. She challenged herself to create one original piece of art every day in 2011.

She chose to format each piece the size of a 2.5” x 3.5” trading card, and before she knew it, her daily drawings were becoming a Tarot deck. She decided to go with it and The Incidental Tarot was born.

DeFount wants to be clear about the ‘incidental’ nature of the deck. The images, like all art, are a mixture of the intentional and the unconscious, but she meant to draw what she’s drawn.

The deck is incidental only in that it arose from another project, and wasn’t originally intended. But it certainly is a lovely surprise.

She’s decided to publish it herself and like so many Tarot creators, is looking for help, in this case with the printing and promotion of the deck.

She’s got herself an IndieGoGo page and is offering a copy of the deck to people donating $25 or more.

Check it out. It’s pretty, and magical, and I love how it came to be.
