It looks like Front Royal, Virginia might be the next city to repeal its ban on fortune telling.
According to nvdaily.com, Tarot reader Maya White Sparks had been reading cards in the back of a shop on Main Street until about a month ago when she was told to stop.
As it turns out, ‘fortunetelling’ and ‘magic art’ are illegal in Front Royal and someone complained.
Tucked between a statute against disturbing religious worship and how to properly discard a refrigerator is Municipal Code 110-17 which states:
A. It shall be unlawful for any company of gypsies or other strolling company or person to receive compensation or reward for pretending to tell fortunes or to practice any so-called “magic art.”
B. Every person violating this section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and fined not less than five hundred dollars ($500.) or confined in jail not less than one (1) nor more than six (6) months, or by both such fine and imprisonment.
Claiming that the ordinance is discriminatory and encroaches on her freedom of religion, Sparks brought the issue to Town Manager Steve Burke, and it looks like she’s being heard.
According to Burke, the question of rescinding the code is being examined by the town attorney and will be brought before council for consideration very soon.
I’ll let you know if I hear more.

Get down to work. Nothing exciting going on, except maybe the chance to get more done than you thought you would.
Follow the template and don’t worry about being particularly innovative today. It’s probably more important to just get it done.
To motivate yourself try remembering that what you’re working on now is setting you up for your future. Put in the effort and it’ll ultimately pay off.

You’ve been working hard and the people that matter are starting to take notice. Take pride in doing a good job.
You’re becoming a master at your trade, and mastery requires not only technical skill, but also an appreciation for the art in what you do.
When you care about your job or the tasks you’ve taken on, the work involved is rarely a chore. Look at your tasks as the creative processes they are.
Whatever you’re doing, you’re creating something, bringing something new into the world. Consider your role as creator with the seriousness it deserves.
You’re becoming very good at what you’ve been working hard on. Congratulations, keep it up.

The Moon moves into Libra today, and will stay there until Tuesday.
Looking at this transit through the lens of the Tarot, it would be like the High Priestess is wearing Justice’s clothing. She takes on the mantle of the Karmic Decider.
With the High Priestess as Justice, or the Moon in Libra, we might be required to face up to something and decide.
Our emotions will demand respect. If we’ve leaned too far back or forward, we’ll probably find ourselves moving just as dramatically the other way.
It can be a slightly challenging period, perhaps a little manic. But by the time it’s done, something is likely to have been decided upon.
Don’t be alarmed by conflicting emotions. They’re there because you can see both sides. It’s not good enough though to just acknowledge them and walk away.
During this transit you’re being asked to take a stand one way or another. And you’ve got the wisdom and power to do so.

#17 – The Star
Optimism and rejuvenation are the themes for the day. Active generosity and compassion come easy so don’t hold back. Give and you will receive.
Embrace the Universe’s capacity to provide you with what you need when you need it most. That’s what miracles are and the Star is the goddess of miracles.
If things have been tough lately, now’s a time when you can finally lean back and take a bit of a break. Surround yourself with as much beauty as you can. It will help to replenish your soul.
Art, music, and the glory of the night sky are all worthy subjects of meditation. Let them fill you with the inspiration you need for the next leg of your journey.

A few months back, Donnaleigh de LaRose recommended I read Yoav Ben-Dov’s Tarot: The Open Reading. I’m really glad she did, I like it. It talks about the Tarot Marseille, and as might be expected by the title, Yoav Ben-Dov’s ‘Open Reading’ style of using it.
Especially for those readers who might be intimidated by the Marseille deck, I recommend this book. But I think all readers are likely to find it interesting, whether they use the Tarot Marseille or not. With it’s no-rote style of teaching the cards, Ben-Dov’s method can reinvigorate how you look at any deck.
In addition to writing the book, Yoav Ben-Dov has also done his own restoration of the Marseille deck called the CBD Tarot de Marseille. I don’t have a copy of it yet myself, but I definitely want one, and watching Donnaleigh’s video review of it (below) makes me want it even more.

#11 – Strength
Learn to direct your inner wildness during this period of fiery intensity and your personal power is likely to grow. Innocence and purity work together to balance your passion with wisdom.
Explore ways to act assertively but without aggression. The gentle touch might go a lot further than a loud voice or an impetuous rage.
It’s a very creative time and you’re encouraged to allow yourself room to flourish. Don’t be shy. This is the moment to take action and move forward with plans you may have held off on until now.

The Moon moves into Virgo today and will be there until Saturday.
From a Tarot perspective, you might think of this transit as the High Priestess wearing the Hermit’s clothes. She’s putting on her cowl.
The Moon in Virgo, or High Priestess in the Hermit’s clothing, is a time for practical, quiet reflection. Seeking the advice of an expert, and listening carefully to what they have to say could be worthwhile.
Or maybe someone will be asking you for your advice.
Your home is more important now than the outside world. Start thinking how to make it more practical. You might not be ready to do the work just yet, but this is a great time to plan.
Emotionally, it’s a time of calm. Perfect for listening and reflecting rather than acting out in passion. Take your time. There’s no rush.
Study, organization, contemplation, solitude, emotional self-reflection. Don’t be afraid to be alone right now. There’s lot’s to do on your own.

#3 – The Empress
Creation and the celebration of the senses are highlighted today. Art, food, music – anything that inspires our physical and emotional selves will inspire you and be well worth the time.
Nurture yourself and others. It’ll probably be hard not to. Nurturance isn’t just a luxury. You need to maintain and even increase your strength in order to create what you’ve been working on. Eat delicious, healthy foods, surround yourself with beauty, take warm, aromatic baths . . . it’s all part of the Empress’ path to creation.
If you’ve been dealing with issues surrounding motherhood, women, or femininity in general, this would be a great day to take a closer look. There’s wonderful energy now to help you resolve issues you might have thought irresolvable.
