Tarosophist of the Year Award 2010

Beyond Worlds - Tarosophist of the Year 2010

What an incredible honour!! Beyond Worlds has been voted Tarosophist of the Year by the highly esteemed international Tarot association, Tarot Professionals.

Marcus Katz, founder of both Tarot Professionals and the fabulous Tarot Town wrote in the award release:

“Donnaleigh, Storm, Theresa and Georgianna have consistently produced an educational, wide-ranging, contemporary, relevant, fun, accessible, professional and well-produced online radio show for Tarot. Their guests have included Lon Milo Duquette, Rachel Pollack, Mary K. Greer, and I personally discovered how friendly and professional they were as hosts when I appeared on the show during the year.

Donnaleigh’s infectious enthusiasm and courteous questioning gets the best out of every guest, supported by Storm’s sharp wit, Theresa’s no-nonsense approach and Georgianna’s down-to-earth authenticity. As a group, they are the ideal ‘four suits’ of a full deck and demonstrate the diverse heart of the Tarot.”

I’m blown away. And so very grateful to Marcus and Tarot Professionals. And of course, to all of our listeners. It truly would be pointless without you.

My co-hosts Donnaleigh de LaRose, Storm Cestavani and Theresa Reed are three of the best Tarot readers I’ve ever met, not to mention very excellent people.  I feel blessed to be on this Tarot adventure with them.

Thank you all! And thank you to the cards.

Winter Solstice and the Lunar Eclipse

December 20th, 2010 § 0 comments § permalink

Tomorrow is the Winter Solstice. And it’s even more special this year than usual. Not only will it be the shortest day and longest night of 2010, but it falls on the same day as a full lunar eclipse. This hasn’t happened in 456 years!

The sun, earth and moon will begin to align at 1:33 a.m. EST causing the earth’s shadow to appear as a dark red bite at the edge of the moon. The ‘total’ eclipse will start at 2:41 a.m. and last 72 minutes.

According to NASA, the peak of the event will be at 3:17 a.m. “when the moon will be in deepest shadow, displaying the most fantastic shades of coppery red.”

Astrologically it’s kind of a big deal too. Eclipses speed things up. And often uncover what’s hidden. They highlight situations in our lives that require attention.

What comes up during an eclipse isn’t always easy to face, but it’s always worthwhile to consider. Let’s make the most of this one.

Happy Solstice Everyone!

Maryland Senator Challenges Ban on Fortune Telling

December 17th, 2010 § 0 comments § permalink

Senator Joseph Getty, R-District 5, intends to introduce legislation to repeal Carroll County Maryland’s ban on fortune tellers.

Presently, Carroll’s code says, “a person may not demand or accept payment or gratuity to forecast or foretell, or pretend to forecast or foretell the future of another person by: 1. reading a card; 2. reading the palm of a hand; or 3. any other scheme, practice or device.”

Violators could face a $100 fine and/or up to six months in the Carroll Detention Center.

The prohibition on accepting payment for divining and/or pretending to divine, was put into the Carroll County Code in 2002, after the state removed it from the criminal code. In Maryland, both Caroline and Talbot Counties also specifically ban payment for divination.

A decision by Maryland’s Supreme Court this past June determined that a similar prohibition in Montgomery County was an unconstitutional restriction on protected speech.

Citing this case, Getty said a prohibition on fortune telling in Carroll County is a violation of the First Amendment of the Constitution.

According to the Carroll County Times, neither the Carroll County Board of Commissioners nor the delegation of the General Assembly had any objections to changing the county code through legislation.

Power to you Senator Getty. And thank you to Ariel Harper Nave, the astrologer who brought this issue to his attention.

Billy Corgan is a Fool

December 1st, 2010 § 0 comments § permalink

Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins loves the Tarot. And of all the cards, the Fool speaks to him the loudest. While talking about his newest release, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, Corgan told Albequrque’s Local IQ,

“We are all, in essence, on the fool’s journey. So the inspiration for the [new] album is the story of the fool, which is the story of life as we all struggle towards transcendence.”

Corgan is releasing Teargarden like a Tarot reading, dealing out one card/song at a time. By the time he’s done, the entire work will have 44 songs. The 22 majors and each of their shadows?

The first six songs are available for free download on the band’s website. Corgan plans to release all of them like this, getting constant feedback as he records the rest of the album.

Listen here to the songs available so far. Or download them if you like. He wants you to.

Bem Psi Study: read it for yourself

November 23rd, 2010 § 0 comments § permalink

a follow-up story …..

I’ve written about Cornell psychology professor emeritus Daryl Bem and his precognition experiments before. A former stage magician, mentalist and self-described sceptic, Bem has been researching human predictive capacity for two decades now.

His scientific paper, Feeling the Future, will be published in next month’s issue of The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. His focus has been on the human potential to anticipate future experiences. Are we able to know things that are going to happen before they do?

His research involved nine experiments and more than 1,000 university students. According to Bem, in all but one of the experiments, the hypotheses that psi exists is confirmed. He says, “the odds against the possibility that the combined results are merely chance coincidences or statistical flukes are about 74 billion to 1.”

Of course the next step is critical discussion of his work and replication.  Bem acknowledges that most academic psychologists don’t believe psi exists. In fact, he claims they’re more skeptical than physicists. But he’s ready for their imput.

His intention has been to provide well-controlled demonstrations of psi, able to be replicated by independent investigators. To that end, Bem has been compiling replication packages for scientists interested in running the tests themselves. As he says, “that is the acid test of any surprising new finding: independent replication.”

Bem’s paper is available on-line now if you want to take a look. Click here to read it for yourself.

Psychic Setting for your Holiday Table

Good Fortune Tablescape

Want a fresh look for this year’s Holiday table? Maybe one with a mystical twist? Look no further. Shelby’s Garden of San Carlos, California came up with the Good Fortune tablescape.

A Ouija board, Magic 8 ball, and curtained-off fortune-telling area are all part of the design.   But where are the Tarot cards?

It’s not a setting for everyone’s tastes.   And it seems more about the psychic than simple ‘good fortune’, but I’m kind of liking it.  If conversation lagged over dinner, there’d be lots there to get it going again.

Exhuming Tycho Brahe, Again

November 19th, 2010 § 0 comments § permalink

Tycho Brahe

Tycho Brahe

He was buried over four hundred years ago, exhumed about a hundred years ago, and now they’ve dug him up again. Tycho Brahe was a Danish nobleman, astronomer, astrologer and alchemist who died mysteriously in 1601.

Born in 1546, Brahe is considered the founder of modern observational astronomy. And he came up with his own model of the universe, the Tychonic system. He thought that all the planets but the earth revolved around the sun, and that the sun and moon revolved around the earth. Of course he was wrong.

But he was correct about a lot of other things. No one before Tycho had ever tried to study the stars and planets as comprehensively as he did. Prior to him, it was commonly believed that beyond the moon, the universe was steady and unchangeable. His meticulous observations challenged that view and there was no going back.

Details surrounding his sudden death in Prague have remained elusive. Bladder infection, kidney failure, maybe murder. Perhaps poisoning from his prosthetic nose. We don’t know. But Danish scientists from Aarhus University are determined to find out.

They have to return the bodies of Tycho and his wife to Prague today, but the researchers have been feverishly sampling tissue and bone, and promise to share their discoveries in a book due out next year.

antimatter

antimatter

What beautiful synchronicity that the man who coined the term nova and changed our view of the universe forever, resurfaced the week CERN scientists captured antimatter and another team of researchers found a Jupiter-like planet on the outskirts of the Milky Way.

Tycho was above ground for a moment in 1901 as well. Just as the Curies were playing with radium and polonium, and Marconi received his first radio signal from across the Atlantic. Nothing’s been the same since.

What’s that antimatter going to tell us? And the new planet? What huge discoveries are we about to make? Are our perceptions of everything, including our place in the world, about to change?

Exciting times. No wonder Tycho wanted to join us for a bit. Or maybe he’s some sort of herald.

Psychic Spared Death Sentence

November 14th, 2010 § 1 comment § permalink

Good news. The Saudi Arabian Supreme Court has refused to ratify the death sentence of Lebanese psychic, Ali Sibat. He had been convicted of practicing witchcraft and sentenced to death last November.

Prior to his arrest, Sibat was a psychic talk-show host on Lebanese satellite TV. He took calls, told fortunes and gave advice. Though legal in Lebanon, such activities are illegal in Saudi Arabia. He never did a show from Saudi Arabia, but in 2008 he was arrested there while on a pilgrimage to the holy city of Medina.

This past Thursday, a three-judge panel ruled that the death sentence was inappropriate because there was no proof that others were harmed as a result of his actions. His case is to be retried in a Medina court and the judges recommended that the sentence be commuted and Sibat deported.

Malcolm Smart, director of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa programme, said in a statement this week,

“The Supreme Court’s decision is a welcome step and may lead to Ali Hussain Sibat’s no longer facing the death penalty. However, we continue to urge that he be immediately released as he was convicted solely for the peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of expression.”

I agree. May Ali Sibat be returned home safe and soon.
