#2 – The High Priestess

This is a good day to give your spirit some serious attention.  Take a little time by yourself to think about what it is that you believe.  What do you think of the world and your place in it?  What ultimately gives your life meaning?

It’s also a good time right now to pay attention to the messages other people have been sending you.   Let yourself absorb the world around you without feeling the need to jump in right away and take action.  This is a better time to sit and receive than to act.

Observe, listen and think about what it is you’re doing.  Through reflection you’ll start to see all sides.  Through this wider perspective you’ll find the priorities and direction that can help you on your path.

The High Priestess and the Empress from The Tabloid Tarot

The High Priestess - The Tabloid Tarot (deck-in-progress) by Georgianna Boehnke

One of my many Tarot-projects-in-progress is the Tabloid Tarot, a celebrity themed deck I started working on at the beginning of the year.

I haven’t managed to get much time to focus on it lately but I think it’s calling me again. I’ve got a growing pile of old magazines, and it’s about time I get to them.

The Empress from The Tabloid Tarot (deck-in-progress) by Georgianna Boehnke

In the meantime though, I thought I’d share two cards I’ve already got started.

They’re the High Priestess and the Empress, two of Tarot’s female heavyweights. Numerically, they follow one another in the deck and I often see them as different sides of the same woman.

In the Tabloid Tarot, that duality is made clear by using images of the beautiful Amber Rose in two different personas – the Ice Blue Fluffed Marshmallow Priestess and the Warm Golden Whipped Cream Empress.

Vesta, the High Priestess, and Meteorites

Oblique View of Vesta's South Polar Region

Vesta

While visiting SpaceWeather.com, I discovered that NASA scientists may have figured out why so many meteorites from the asteroid Vesta have been showering the Earth.

In Roman myth, Vesta was the virginal keeper of the family, the hearth and the home. She was the goddess of the sacred flame.

She was also the daughter of Saturn and sister to Ceres, Juno, Pluto, Neptune and Jupiter. And within her circle, she was an important player.

Her virgin status was self-imposed as apparently, when her brother Jupiter ascended to the throne she asked only two things of him.

Vesta

Vesta

The first was that she be able to remain a virgin. And second, she asked to be the one to offer the first oblations in all sacrifices.

I know the Golden Dawn Tarot system assigns the Moon to the High Priestess, but if I were choosing, I might give her Vesta.

Both goddesses are virginal, nurturing, and keepers of the sacred truth.

They’re compassionate, wise, and modest, concerned more with the fire of the spirit than crazy drama, or sexual exploits.

NASA, of course, is not concerned with any of that. They’re just trying to determine why so many pieces of the 2nd biggest asteroid are flying to Earth.

According to the space agency, the Dawn spacecraft which entered Vesta’s orbit last July, has discovered a thirteen mile-high mountain on its surface, two and a half times the height of Mt. Everest.

Some researchers are speculating that the falling meteorites are pieces of Vesta’s landscape that splintered off during a giant collision that first created the mountain.

They’re doing tests right now to see if they can prove it.

But from my perspective, I’m more interested in the symbolic meaning of these meteorites.

Rather than simply space rocks, they might be celestial messages from the High Priestess reminding us to cultivate wisdom and compassion, and a respect for the sacred.

It’s not a very scientific view, but I enjoy thinking about it.

I might even get myself an actual piece of Vesta as a tangible relic of the goddess. At only $34.95, it’s almost a steal.

Moon in Scorpio – High Priestess in Death's Clothes

March 21st, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

The High Priestess in Death's ClothesThe moon moves into Scorpio today at 3:17 pm EST and stays there until Wednesday, March 23rd at 4:07 pm.

If you translate this transit into the Tarot, you could say that the High Priestess is dressed as Death. She’s in the midst of a great transformation.

The High Priestess represents receptive wisdom and reflective emotionality. She learns through wide open perception, and feels by reflecting the feelings of those around her.

She sees the world as it is, awesome in both beauty and cruelty. And understands that life flows, is cyclical like the tides.

One day you’re an acorn, another a tree, and finally the ashes where the new seed lands.

The High Priestess is okay with it all. Since life is what interests her, all parts are sacred and worthy of contemplation. Being heavy, doesn’t scare her.

And that’s a good thing when she’s dressed as Death. There’s nothing light about those clothes.

Death in the Tarot describes the process of decomposition, the decay of what once was, into the fertile soil that incubates what’s to grow.

Death isn’t concerned with good or bad, left or right, green or purple. It takes it all down. Whatever’s run its course is open game for transformation.

The High Priestess is comfortable in this environment. She can cope with deep feelings and isn’t frightened by a little pain.

Compassionate detachment and emotional depth allow her to grow when the big changes take place.

The Moon in Scorpio, or High Priestess in Death’s clothing, suggests a time when feelings run deep. The ability to end relationships that don’t work, or release stagnant emotions is accentuated.

If there’s a situation in your life that’s nearing its completion, especially if it’s emotional or relationship-oriented, this might be a good time to let it go. At least explore it with emotional clarity.

This isn’t a time to be afraid, but rather a time to face your fears with equanimity and intelligence.

You’ve got what it takes. Don’t back down from the scary stuff.
