Fortune Telling – the dance

June 30th, 2012 § 2 comments § permalink

Here’s another Tarot Kickstarter Project, but this time it’s not a deck. It’s a dance show called Fortune Telling by the Long Beach, California dance company, RhetOracle.

Fortune Telling will be the company’s 6th full-length show. It features 10 new works, all inspired by the imagery of the Rider Waite Smith deck.

The performance will be structured as a Tarot reading with seven different choreographers each creating a dance based on a particular card.

The cards they’ll explore include the Magician and the Knight of Wands reversed, the Fool, Death, the 8 of Swords, the Hanged Man, and Judgment.

The show looks really interesting. I hope they get the support they need.

Take a look at the video below to see what you think. And for more information, visit the Fortune Telling project page.

Quilting, Tarot, and the 2 of Wooden Spoons

April 17th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

Quilts, like Tarot decks, are made up of many little pieces. Each piece has meaning of its own, but together they have a chance to tell a much bigger story.

I wrote about the Kitchen Tarot by Susan Shie before, but I came across it again in a news piece about a tribute to Ardis James, a long-time patron of quilt making.

The Kitchen Tarot by Susan Shie, guidebook by Dennis Fairchild

In the Kitchen Tarot’s 2 of Wooden Spoons, Shie depicted Ardis and her friend Betty whipping up some salsa. And what’s especially wonderful about the image is that it’s actually a quilt.

All the original images from the Kitchen Tarot are quilts. Can you imagine how beautiful they must be!

For those lucky enough to be in the Lincoln, Nebraska area, there’s now a chance for you to see at least one of them in person.

Shie donated the 2 of Wooden Spoons to the International Quilt Study Center and Museum, and it’s presently on display as part of the Tribute to Ardis James. Get down to see it if you can.

And in the spirit of quilt making, take a look at the video below.

It features Diane Rose, a quilter from Waco, Texas. Not only are her quilts beautiful, but she makes them all by hand despite being completely blind.

The piece has nothing to do with Tarot, but Rose is truly inspirational, and well worth taking a listen to.

Tarot on the Streets

January 17th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

I was out with my camera again last week and came across this little Tarot spread in an alley on a wall.

The King and Queen have been around for a while now. I’ve even used them in the first draft of my Graffiti deck.

But when I saw them this time, they looked like they’d been brightened up a bit, and a new card has joined the pair.

It’s a Joker that looks an awful lot like the Death card.

I’m not sure what that means for the relationship between the King and the Queen, but it’s an interesting development.

I’ll be watching this wall.

The Art of Tarot – an tarot art show in toronto

The Art of Tarot at The Hermit's Lamp

The Art of Tarot

A Tarot art show in my very own city and I didn’t even know it! That is, until someone mysteriously left a postcard for the event in my front door.

It’s The Art of Tarot featuring twelve artists sharing Tarot inspired pieces at The Hermit’s Lamp, a new magic shop and event center in Toronto.

The Hermit’s Lamp is run by Andrew McGregor, who I posted about earlier this year.

Through their Toronto Tarot Portal, he and James Wells do regular podcasts on a wide variety of tarot related topics. And they’re very good.

The Art of Tarot is looking towards the future of Tarot, though it’s clearly inspired by traditions of the past. The pieces are fabulous, I’d love to see them in a deck.

Most are paintings or drawings, but there’s also a sculpture, a stained glass window, and even a quilt. I’ve got to get over there and see them myself.

The show runs through the end of November, but the gallery is only open Wednesday through Saturday. Get there if you can.

And to whoever left the postcard in my front door, thank you!

Made in Montreal by Juno Youn

On the weekend I went to an art show by Juno Youn. It was called Made In Montreal: En considerant le monde different.

The show has no intentional connection to tarot, but as usual, I couldn’t help but see it there.

Of course there were symbols all over. It was an art show after all. But there were some pieces that especially reminded me of concepts in the cards.

These four struck me as the four suits right away. They could be the four aces in a deck.

All are untitled, I added the captions.

And this piece called, Rebirth of a Bird Man reminds me of #21, the World. Everything in the universe is in all of us.

This painting is enormous, not all of it is shown.

There were other fabulous pieces in the show, and my pictures don’t nearly do the work justice. They should be seen in person.

So if you’re in Toronto now till April 30th, stop by the De Luca Fine Art Gallery and check them out.
