Aleister Crowley, the Painter

Aleister Crowley

Aleister Crowley

It’s a pretty fascinating video. Paintings by and of Aleister Crowley.

Kenneth Anger’s short film, The Man We Want To Hang, gets its name from the famous 1923 Sunday Express article that called Crowley the ‘Wickedest Man In The World.’

Released in 2001, the film was shot at London’s October Gallery in the late 1990s at a show called ‘An Old Master.’ The score is by Anatoly Liadov.

Paintings and other art work was drawn from the collections of Keith Richmond, Jimmy Page and the Ordo Templi Orientis International. They depict a variety of subjects from simple landscapes, to daemonic beings, to portraits of Crowley himself.

Creator of the Thoth Tarot and author of countless magical and other texts, Aleister Crowley was certainly notorious. And maybe he wasn’t such a fine artist. But I’d be thrilled to have any one of his paintings.

Why hasn’t someone made a Tarot deck from them yet?

#4 – The Emperor

You can expect a day of fiery energy and powerful determination.  In whatever you do today, you’re encouraged to do it with strength and creativity – in fact it would be hard not to.  Within your domain you’re the one in charge, so manifest your will.  What have you been wanting to create in your world?  Start making it really happen!

While you’re encouraged to take your power and run with it, there is a challenge associated with the Emperor.  Remember – not everyone might want to do things your way.  Everyone thinks they’re right.  Sometimes you have to give a little.  If you don’t, don’t be surprised if other people start rearing their own Emperor energy and you’re smack dab in the middle of a fight.

Masculine energy is strongly indicated with the Emperor card and issues surrounding males, especially those in authority are likely during this time.  Stay strong and true and you won’t go wrong.

Prince of Wands

Charge forward with strength and vitality.  This is a day of power, passion and growing energy. Your plan is in place and now’s the time to take it to the next step.  Use your internal fire to take you where you’re tying to go.

You don’t need to wait till everything’s perfect to start moving.  In fact, more often than not, things don’t start falling where they should until you start shifting them up and get some excitement going.  Take a chance that you know what you’re doing and act on it.  Believe in yourself and don’t be shy.

Augmented Reality, Wonderment and the Tarot

December 24th, 2010 § 0 comments § permalink

Simplistically speaking, Augmented Reality can be described as a realtime, interactive environment that combines the real world with the virtual.

Helen Papagiannis, a PhD candidate in Communication and Culture at York University in Toronto, designed an Augmented Reality exhibit for the Ontario Science Centre. Among other things, it involves old movies, a fog machine and my favourite part, playing cards.

Someone enters an area where there’s a platform with some cards on it. When the person places a card in the center of the platform, fog starts billowing and an image on the wall identifies the card they chose. A film by Augmented Reality pioneer, Morton Heilig then begins.

Of course for me, it would be even more fun if the cards were Tarot cards and the film that appeared was about the theme in that card, but that’s a project for another time. I think this one is great as is.

But in the video below where Papagiannis talks about her project, what I especially like is what she has to say about wonderment. Something I’ve always felt about the Tarot.

She describes wonderment as being part delight, curiosity, inquiry and action. Interestingly enough, in her presentation, she highlights these ideas in blue, pink, yellow and green.

I couldn’t help but see her descriptors as the four suits – cups for delight, wands for curiosity, swords for inquiry and the disks for action.

And when Papagiannis talks about both cinema and Augmented Reality, she describes the technology itself as being at least as entrancing as the story it tells. I’d say exactly the same thing about Tarot.

The more I think about it, Augmented Reality and the Tarot are not so dissimilar. Not only is Tarot a technology of wonderment, a tool to inspire delight, curiosity, inquiry and action. But it also plays between the worlds.

As Augmented Reality manouevers between the real and the virtual, the Tarot bridges the conscious and the unconscious, and at it’s best, the body and the soul.

Papagiannis has some advice to AR designers, technicians and scientists. She encourages them to “be responsive, and actively seek and inspire wonderment to see the world afresh.”

There couldn’t be better advice to Tarot readers everywhere. So I say ‘ditto that’.

Ace of Wands

Hey! Didn’t we just have this card on Monday! Must be some sort of message here …..

The flame has been ignited and there’s a new feeling floating around.  This is a day to let inspiration lead the way.  Throw out your old excuses and start something you really care about.  Passion and fire are what motivates the soul and it’s time to listen to yours.

You might not yet know what’s different but you know your old way of doing things is no longer possible.  A new spirit has been planted and you can probably feel the excitement beginning to build.

Whatever it is that moves you with enthusiasm should be your starting point.  Being true to your spirit isn’t being selfish.  It’s what makes you fully human.

The Hanged Man Swings

December 23rd, 2010 § 0 comments § permalink

Take a look at this music video for the song ‘Maa’ by Boston duo Sabaztan.

They’ve based it on the Tarot’s Hanged Man and describe it as ‘seeing the world from a completely new perspective, spiritual enlightenment.’

It starts with a young man in a suit in a downtown center. Next thing you know he’s getting bare in a forest with a woman in a veil.

Talk about feeling the card. This guy’s definitely seeing things from a new perspective.

Interestingly enough, today’s Tarot Card of the Day is also the Hanged Man. Take a look at my animated take on the card —> the hanged man swings

#12 – The Hanged Man

This isn’t the day for action.  It’s time to slow down and take a close look at what’s been going on. And if you can do it from a different perspective – great!   Choose a comfortable place to relax and review what you’ve been up to.  It might seem like a sacrifice, but it’s well worth it.

Are there patterns in your life that seem to becoming more obvious than usual? This is a wonderful time to pay attention to how you’re life’s been going these last three months or so.  Does it remind you of another time – maybe 12 years ago?  Look carefully at any people, places or things from your past (or that remind you of the past) that might unexpectedly appear. They might be highlighting particular areas in your life you’re repeating. Is it a repetition you’re happy with?

After you’ve done some review, start thinking about where you want to go next.  Your old ways are almost over.  Think about the new patterns you want to develop – you’ll be ready to start them soon enough.  For now, relax, review and let yourself imagine?

Jack the Mystic Monkey

December 22nd, 2010 § 0 comments § permalink

There’s a new animal psychic on the scene, a cotton-top tamarin named Jack.

Jack lives at the Tynemouth’s Blue Reef Aquarium, in North Tyneside, UK and has been predicting the results of cricket and soccer matches. He’s on a winning streak right now having foretold the outcome of the last three Ashes Test matches.

With the passing of Paul the Psychic Octopus, the aquarium wondered if they had an oracle of their own who might carry on Paul’s legacy. Though they have an octopus, they chose to go with this little monkey instead.

They seem to have chosen right. So far at least.

Like Paul’s, Jack’s methods are straightforward. He’s presented with two dishes of food, each dish with a flag on it representing the teams at play.

If he eats from a bowl, that team is his pick to win. If he skips the snack, he’s calling it a draw. Apparently banana flavoured baby food is his medium of choice.

According to Anna Etchells from the Aquarium, if Jack manages to call the entire Ashes series, it would equate to odds of 243 to one.

Go Jack!!

6 of Cups

It’s a wonderful day to say thank you – to your family, friends, and even your enemies.  Nostalgia and happy memories might fill your head and it’s worth remembering all the love there is around you.  Take pleasure in acknowledging it and grateful to extend it further.

Giving and receiving are two sides of the same joy.  Take pleasure in both and don’t be shy to tell people how much they mean to you.   You’ll probably be surprised by how much they love you back.

With close relationships, this is an especially important time to remember the history and strength of your time together. It’s these ties that have helped you through your most serious moments – both good and bad. Don’t take them lightly, close friends really are special, and not as common as you might think.
