6 of Swords

This is a good day to get your thoughts as clear as possible.  You’ve got some emotional issues that require honest focused attention.  To move forward with your commitment to self, it’s really important that you get your thoughts straight.

What choices are you being asked to make at this time?  Look them squarely in the face and choose.  If you can’t choose now, when do you think you can?  At least decide that.  Ask yourself what will bring you closer to your own truth – a union of mind, body and soul.

You’re sharp as a tack today.  Take advantage of the energy to decide what needs deciding.  You can do it.  How will you get to your next step if you don’t?

Homage To An Octopus

Paul the Psychic Octopus

Paul the Octopus

So Paul the Octopus is back in the news. Besides Nostradamus, he’s got to be the most famous psychic in the world. His fame though, is well deserved.

Not only was he able to correctly predict outcomes in the 2010 World Cup, he was also able to get his human companions to understand his predictions.

Quite a feat for any psychic, even Nostradamus. For a cephalopod, it was truly remarkable.

Happily, Paul’s work will not be forgotten. The Sea Life Aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany, were he lived and divined, has erected a monument to his memory.

Unveiled last Thursday, the memorial is a six-foot plastic replica of Paul clutching a soccer ball in his tentacles.

His ashes are inside the ball, in a gold-leaf urn designed in his image.

A beautiful tribute.

And stay tuned, Reuters is reporting that an American produced documentary is in the works. Can’t wait.

#6 – The Lovers

Are there choices to be made?  Decisions you’ve put off for another time?  Well this is the time.  The Lovers card asks us to finally make up our minds – either commit or get out now.

On a personal level, the Lovers reminds us to balance the opposites within ourselves.  Are your ying and yang in sync?  Does your conscious experience compliment your unconscious dream state or do they seem at war?  Are you living a life that satisfies your soul? Heavy questions, but this is a great day to think about them.  In fact, you might find it difficult not to.

This is a serious commitment you’re thinking about.  To help you make up your mind, ask yourself which direction brings you closer to your soul’s call. You probably already know the answer.

It’s a good time to get to work.  Nothing exciting, just keep moving forward step by step.  It’ll go a lot faster now that you’re seriously on your way.  Enjoy this building process.  You’re making steady progress.  If you keep moving like this, you’ll reach your goals soon.

And if you’re feeling a little dull because all you do is work, work and plan for more work, that’s okay.  That’s what the energy is right now and you might as well go with it.  Creating stability is worth the effort.  There’ll be plenty of time for fun soon enough.

4 of Cups

Today it might seem like you’ve got it all, and yet there’s still something missing.  Emotionally, you’ve got plenty of support.  People around you love you and you love them back.  Despite it all though, there’s a nagging feeling that it’s just not enough.  Perhaps you’re fantasizing about a new love, a new friend, or at a new spark to make what you’ve already got even more special.

Examine these feelings carefully and determine what it is that leaves you slightly unsatisfied.  Are you being reasonable – or a bit of a brat.  Pay attention to what you’ve got and don’t forget to give thanks.

At the same time – if there is something missing, it’s missing and there’s no getting around it.  Meditate on what it is that leaves you wanting more and figure out whether or not it’s something you should pursue.

Remember though, what you wish for might just appear out of thin air – make sure you really want it?

Tarot Growth Years

January 22nd, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

A while ago, I posted a piece on how to determine your Soul and Personality Cards. Today we’re looking at Tarot Growth Years.

With a little basic addition, you can figure out which Tarot card represents the year you’re in – or any year you’d like to look at. The energy carried by that particular Tarot archetype is the energy that will be dominant throughout the year being examined.

Each Tarot Growth Year covers the period from one birthday to the next.  So if your birthday is July 26th, your Tarot Growth Year would go from July 26th through July 25th the next year.

Each year has at least one shadow symbol.  These are energies that further influence your Tarot Growth Year.

To determine what Tarot Growth Year you are in, add the day and month your were born to the year you’d like to look at. Take that total and add all the numbers in a row. If the sum is more than 22, add together the resulting numbers.

Don’t be afraid of the math – it’s really quite easy. Here are some examples:

Let’s say your birthday is December 12th and you’d like to look at the year between your birthday in 2006 and your birthday in 2007 –

12 + 12 + 2006 = 2030
2 + 0 + 3 + 0 = 5
Your Tarot Growth card for 2006/2007 would be #5 – The Hierophant

Let’s say your birthday is April 15th and you’d like to look back to see what was up in 1999 –

4 +15 + 1999 = 2018
2 + 0 + 1 + 8 = 11
Your Tarot Growth card for 1999/2000 would have been #11 – Strength

Today you might find yourself simply working and waiting. You’ve been trying hard but it probably feels like there’s little to show for it.  Keep your chin up!  You are actively creating change in your life, but it takes time.

Try not to get down on yourself while the process continues.  Commitment means sticking through the dull, tough times to reach your goal.  You’re well on your way and it would be a shame not to keep going.  In fact, the hardest part now is not to give up for fear of failure.

There’s still work ahead, but you’re going in the right direction.  Keep plugging away and you will succeed.

Tarot Rituals: Take Them or Leave Them

January 21st, 2011 § 6 comments § permalink

candles burningBefore reading Tarot, many people like to perform some sort of ritual to put them into the spirit or mood of the cards and prepare them for the reading.

I’ve read countless descriptions of what one should do before, during and after a session. But really, I think it’s all rather arbitrary.

Though there’s something to be said for the power of ritual, and showing respect to a process might increase the resonance of a reading, when it comes right down to it, there’s no right or wrong way to do any of the following:

• store your cards
• cleanse your cards
• shuffle your cards
• cut your cards
• present your cards to your client
• sit during a reading
• surround (or not) your space with candles, crystals, incense, talisman or the like

It’s possible that particular rituals feel right, or seem useful. For instance, storing cards in silk and cedar, or shuffling seven times before beginning each reading.

Or maybe you like to face south, or wear red, or burn a blue candle dedicated to Isis and anointed in frankincense. It really doesn’t matter, except that it’s meaningful to you.

If doing these things, or anything else, helps you tune into the cards, the spirits, the client, or yourself, do them. But no one set of rituals is useful to everyone, or is required by the Tarot gods.

crystal quartz

If the message of a particular card is going to get through, it will, regardless of what’s done to set the mood.

And the same holds true in reverse. If you’re not ‘getting’ the cards, no amount of polished crystals or auspicious feng shui positioning is going to help.

As much as I like to set things up a certain way when I can, it’s not always possible. And the truth is, my readings seem to be just as useful when done outside my ritualistic control as within it.

Like reading a book, it might feel best in our favourite chair with a mug of cocoa, but when the story’s good, we’ll be just as absorbed in reading it on the subway as we are at home.

Focusing on the client, intending to help, and learning the cards are the only essentials.  Beyond that, you could be in a ditch or tanning by the pool, the Tarot doesn’t care. It’s always ready to tell its story.

Charge forward with strength and vitality.  This is a day of power, passion and growing energy. Your plan is in place and now’s the time to take it to the next step.  Use your internal fire to take you where you’re tying to go.

You don’t need to wait till everything’s perfect to start moving.  In fact, more often than not, things don’t start falling where they should until you start shifting them up and get some excitement going.  Take a chance that you know what you’re doing and act on it.  Believe in yourself and don’t be shy.
