The High Priestess dressed in Temperance's Clothing

High Priestess as Temperance

The Moon moves into Sagittarius today and will be there until Tuesday.

Looking at it through the eyes of the Tarot, you can describe this transit as being like the High Priestess wearing Temperance’s clothing. She’s dressed like an angel.

The Moon in Sagittarius, or High Priestess in Temperance’s clothing, indicates a time when intellect, practicality, emotions and passion can work together in relative ease.

What’s normally only an idea might find its way to becoming real. Even-tempered inspiration and emotional playfulness can create what look like miracles.

Take this time to bring your emotions in line with your passions. And play with your most serious ideas. It’s in combining the unexpected that you’ll likely find gold.

4 of Swords

Relax, stay calm and maybe even sleep on it.  There’s been a lot on your mind lately, and some of it has been quite heavy.  You need to slow down and reconnect with yourself.

Meditate on the changes you want in your life.   Figure out where your strengths lie and take that route to your goal.  It wouldn’t hurt to even reconsider the goal.  Are you sure you still want it?

And don’t forget your spirit.  Without it, the mental world can be pretty bleak.  Trust your dreams and keep in touch with your soul.  Make a truce with yourself – life isn’t always a battle.

A new sense of self and perspective on the world are available.  But you have to be quiet and still to find them.  Take today to figure it out.  You’ll be stronger in the long run.

The Tower in a Doorway

I’ve been walking around with a camera lately, working on the minor arcana of my Graffiti Tarot.

In a laneway full of garages, I came across this door.  It sure looks like the Tower with a stairway to the Moon behind it.

I can’t imagine that’s what the person who it drew it meant, but maybe….

#5 – The Hierophant

Spiritual questions and tradition are highlighted during this period.  It’s probably important to you now to look carefully at the spiritual structures in your life.  Why do you believe what you do?  Who are your spiritual authorities and what gives them their legitimacy?  Who decides issues of morality for you, your family and/or your community?

Many of these questions are answered with cultural traditions. Today, you’ll probably be examining whether or not the answers you’re accustomed to are still satisfactory.  They might be or they might not be.  Don’t be afraid to seek out your truth simply because it rubs against your comfort zone.  Sometimes growth hurts a bit.

You might be asked to judge someone else’s dispute, or find the need to go to an authority for answers yourself.  Keep your mind open, but your skepticism on.  Ultimately, you’re the only one who can decide whether something makes sense for your life or not.

Darshan

August 5th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

This Kickstarter project isn’t about Tarot, but it reminds me of the creation of a deck. Mystical images are being born.

Manjari Sharma is a photographer, born and raised in Mumbai and presently living in New York City. Through her project Darshan, she plans to photographically recreate nine classical images of gods and goddesses pivotal to Hindu mythology.

Though there are countless paintings and sculptures of the deities, Sharma says there’s been no photos, at least none from scratch. And it’s a vacuum she’d like to fill.

She’s painstakingly put together the image of the first goddess, Maa Laxmi, following tradition to its finest detail.

The process involved a large crew – set and prop builders, makeup artists, art directors, painters, carpenters, jewelry experts, assistants, and of course, a model.

It’s important to Sharma to show that photographs can evoke as strong a spiritual response as the more traditional paintings and sculpture. And for that she believes authenticity and detail is essential.

Each piece will be 6 feet tall, and part of a gallery installation meant to evoke the experience of a Hindu temple. They’re going to be beautiful. And you can help make them happen.

Watch Sharma’s video, and if you’re interested, go on over to her Kickstarter page. She’s accepting donations and offering rewards!

Moon in Scorpio – High Priestess in Death's Clothing

August 5th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

The High Priestess in Death's ClothesThe moon moves into Scorpio today and stays there until Sunday.

If you translate this transit into the Tarot, you could say that the High Priestess is dressed as Death. She’s in the midst of a great transformation.

The Moon in Scorpio, or High Priestess in Death’s clothing, suggests a time when feelings run deep. The ability to end relationships that don’t work, or release stagnant emotions is accentuated.

If there’s a situation in your life that’s nearing its completion, especially if it’s emotional or relationship-oriented, this might be a good time to let it go. At least explore it with emotional clarity.

This isn’t a time to be afraid, but rather a time to face your fears with equanimity and intelligence.

You’ve got what it takes. Don’t back down from the scary stuff.

#11 – Strength

Learn to direct your inner wildness during this period of fiery intensity and your personal power is likely to grow.  Innocence and purity work together to balance your passion with wisdom.

Explore ways to act assertively but without aggression.  The gentle touch might go a lot further than a loud voice or an impetuous rage.

It’s a very creative time and you’re encouraged to allow yourself room to flourish.  Don’t be shy.  This is the moment to take action and move forward with plans you may have held off on until now.

A Tarot Exercise in Perspective

August 4th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

It’s always nice when the cards are obvious and answer our questions with images that clearly make sense. Like the 2 of Cups for relationship queries, or the Justice card for legal issues. But more often than not, it’s less straightforward.

To get used to reading cards from different perspectives, one of the best (and most obvious) things to do is practice.

Try this basic exercise … randomly draw a card from the deck and describe its energy from each of the following perspectives:
•relationships
•business
•politics

When I tried it, I got the 10 of Pentacles. Here’s my quick take …

10 of Pentacles - Riders Waite Smith Tarot

Relationships – The card shows a scene with many people in it, different generations and two species.  It suggests family and a recognition of lineage.

There’s a friendliness between the couple, and their positioning within the picture indicates a certain balance.

They’re literally standing on a threshold.  Maybe they’re getting ready to transition to the next phase, the new Ace and a new beginning.

A strong physical support network is an especially important aspect of this card. There’s power in the tribe.

Business – The 10 of Pentacles suggests wealth, a positive accumulation of physical goods, or prosperity of sorts. It points to a solid business base.

And it’s not only about money, though there are a lot of coins floating around. It’s also about a network of physical support that comes from family, friends and colleagues – our grander network, spanning all generations and maybe even species.

The card might be pointing to a family business, or that the support of one’s family or community will prove particularly helpful.

As a ten, it also suggests that something new is on the horizon that has a solid base to grow from.

Politics – As I’m writing, the big issue in the news is the US debt ceiling. The distribution of wealth has been a major focus of debate, and of course, it’s a main theme in this card.

Gold coins float all over the picture.  Are they rising or falling?  There does seem to be a slight accumulation at the top.  They could represent wealth, the debt, the GDP, or maybe the stock market?

There’s also a lot of people in the card, all engrossed in something or other.  The two younger people seem to be engaging in dialogue, while the older guy is focused on the dogs.

There’s a child there too, looking outside of the card, but holding on to his mother’s dress – could he represent the freshmen in the House? In that case, who are the others?

Many different points of view come together in this one scene, there’s a lot to consider. But as a ten, this card marks a culmination, or the end of a political cycle.  In a short while, a new one will begin.

________________________________________________________________

Try others themes as well – travel, school, spiritual path, whatever comes to mind. The idea is to get used to looking at the energies or ideas in the cards as they play out in different circumstances.

And have fun! Sometimes it’s the silliest of our descriptions that prove to be the most profound.

Waiting and watching will probably be a bit of a preoccupation today.   You’ve begun the process and have done all you can for the moment.

This might be a good time to review the steps you’ve taken so far.  Make sure that you’ve got yourself balanced before the real journey begins.

Virtue is likely to be a key concept.  Virtue here means being true to yourself within and between all your layers – mind, body and spirit.

Are your emotions in line with your thinking?  Are you acting in a way that accurately reflects you’re beliefs and feelings?  Explore these questions and relax.  Your ship will arrive soon.

Mars in Cancer – The Tower Takes a Ride on the Chariot

Mars in Cancer - Tower Rides the Chariot

Tower Rides the Chariot

Mars moves into Cancer today and will stay there until September 19th.

From a Tarot perspective, it would be like the Tower is taking a ride on the Chariot. Lightening might strike, but the Charioteer just keeps moving forward.

The Tower is a wild card, wild in the sense that there’s no telling how it might play out in our lives. It’s always a surprise, though not always welcome.

It shakes things up and gets us back to basics. It shatters the walls we build up around ourselves.

Freedom can arise from chaos, and often that’s what the Tower brings. Liberation through the destruction of what we once thought to be solid.

Freedom is important to the Chariot as well, though it’s typically less dramatic. The Charioteer likes to be on the open road, free from restraint and able to move as he wills.

He’s a warrior, armoured and powerful, able to keep his back strong and his courage steady. He’s not without emotions, he just keeps them to himself.

The Charioteer is perseverance personified. He won’t give up till there’s no road left to travel.

When the Tower appears, it’s usually a little uncomfortable, and when it’s travelling with the Chariot it can be like a tornado on wheels.

But the Charioteer’s less bothered by turmoil than most. Travel at the best of times can be chaos, and he’s a traveller extraordinaire.

Mars in Cancer, or the Tower taking a ride on the Chariot can be a period of powerful change, it’s movement that can seriously alter your direction.

Travel might be less predictable than usual, and it’s likely that unexpected circumstances will get you rethinking plans in general.

Don’t be afraid to change course if suddenly your first path is blocked. There’s a great deal of energy available now. Use the push to get things really happening.

Stay armoured, but keep moving. It could be an exciting time.
