Venus in Capricorn – Empress Dressed in the Devil's Clothing

Venus in Capricorn, the Empress in the Devil's Clothing

Empress as Devil

Venus moves into Capricorn today and will stay there until December 20th.

From a Tarot perspective, this transit would be like the Empress is dressed in the Devil’s clothing. Hairy and winged, she’s trying out a darker look.

The Empress is the universal mother of the Tarot. She gives birth to everything we see, feel, hear, taste, and touch. She is beauty and sensuality, but also unremitting strength.

Her power is in her ability to love fully and without restraint. Whether things are good or bad, she’s there to help celebrate, and/or to mourn.

The Empress sees the world clearly, but loves it anyway. It’s all part of her, and she does what she can to make it beautiful and full of joy.

The Devil is also sensual, but there’s little love attached to his experiences. He’s physicality without grace.

Coarse and occasionally brutal, he obsesses on what’s ‘real’ and gives little attention to airy-fairy ideas like love. But he gets a lot of work done, and plays wilder than most.

His biggest challenge is to let things go, and not to chain himself or others to material desires. They obscure the spirit and can never fully satisfy.

The Empress is a little uncomfortable in this position. She very much appreciates the physical, but without love attached, it can feel sort of vulgar.

Venus in Capricorn, or the Empress in the Devil’s clothing is a time of creative intensity and physical manifestation.

Focus on getting things done and making them real, but do so with compassion for yourself and others.

Pushing through a task without connecting to it on an emotional level, or with an eye to the beautiful, will only lessen the value of what you create.

Celebrate and love with passion, but try not to chain yourself to anything for too long.

A History of the Sky, and Skies in Tarot

November 25th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

The video below by Ken Murphy shows the sky above San Francisco’s Exploratorium every 10 seconds for an entire year.

It’s called A History of the Sky and is made up of 365 little movies. They’re all synchronized by time of day, starting in the early morning.

It’s pretty amazing. You’re able to see a year’s worth of sky in just six minutes.

And despite San Francisco’s famous fog, most of the skies are pretty blue. There is a lot of gray though, and when the clouds are there, they move fast.

As most things do, the video got me thinking about Tarot, specifically the skies in the Rider Waite Smith deck.

I started looking through the cards to see which ones had clouds, and which had blue skies.

Ace of Pentacles from the Rider Waite Smith Tarot

Ace of Pentacles

There are cloud puffs in all the Aces, in the four and seven of cups, and where angels or magical creatures appear in the Majors.

There are also clouds in the Tower, but I can’t tell if they’re from the fire or the weather.

Queen of Pentacles from the Rider Waite Smith Tarot

Queen of Pentacles

There are a lot of blue skies in the suit of Cups, and in the Wands, but the Pentacles are mostly gray. Their Court Cards though, are all bright yellow.

It’s the Sword suit that has all the weather clouds in it. And how interesting that the suit representing the mind has the stormiest skies.

3 of Swords from the Rider Waite Smith Tarot

3 of Swords

For all their rationality, they’re not so calm. Winds blow this way and that, shifting perspectives and stirring up emotions.

The skies above the Knight of Swords, and in the Five and the Ten, seem especially ominous, but it actually rains in the Three. It’s clear that some thoughts can cause pain.

Skies aren’t just coloured backgrounds in the Tarot. They’re part of the story, and giant clues to the message in the cards.

9 of Cups from the Rider Waite Smith Tarot

9 of Cups

For instance, a yellow sky might mean happiness, strength, and/or clarity. What’s hidden is likely to be revealed.

And if it’s dark, it could be the opposite. There might be fear and/or powerlessness, and the need to feel around rather than directly confront a situation.

#14 Temperance from the Rider Waite Smith Tarot

Temperance

Blue skies are calm, clear, and typically nice to be under. While gray skies can go either way. They might hearken storms, or they might just be still, like the mind and heart in perfect balance.

There’s only one orange sky in the deck, and it belongs to the Emperor. Whether he uses it to heal or to harm, his passion fills the atmosphere around him and could burn anyone who gets too close.

Next time you play with your cards, don’t forget to look at the skies. They’ve got lots to add to the story, after all it’s under them that all the action in the world takes place.

Moon in Sagittarius – High Priestess in Temperance's Clothing

The High Priestess dressed in Temperance's Clothing

High Priestess as Temperance

The Moon moves into Sagittarius today and will be there until Sunday.

Looking at it through the eyes of the Tarot, you can describe this transit as being like the High Priestess wearing Temperance’s clothing. She’s dressed like an angel.

The Moon in Sagittarius, or High Priestess in Temperance’s clothing, indicates a time when intellect, practicality, emotions and passion can work together in relative ease.

What’s normally only an idea might find its way to becoming real. Even-tempered inspiration and emotional playfulness can create what look like miracles.

Take this time to bring your emotions in line with your passions. And play with your most serious ideas. It’s in combining the unexpected that you’ll likely find gold.

#6 – The Lovers

Are there choices to be made?  Decisions you’ve put off for another time?  Well this is the time.  The Lovers card asks us to finally make up our minds – either commit or get out now.

On a personal level, the Lovers reminds us to balance the opposites within ourselves.  Are your ying and yang in sync?  Does your conscious experience compliment your unconscious dream state or do they seem at war?  Are you living a life that satisfies your soul? Heavy questions, but this is a great day to think about them.  In fact, you might find it difficult not to.

This is a serious commitment you’re thinking about.  To help you make up your mind, ask yourself which direction brings you closer to your soul’s call. You probably already know the answer.

The Baroque Bohemian Cats' Tarot

November 24th, 2011 § 4 comments § permalink

For those of you who are both Tarot fans and cat lovers, check out the video below.

It’s the soon to be released Baroque Bohemian Cats’ Tarot, third edition, by Karen Mahony and Alex Ukolov of Baba Studio in Prague.

It’s been out of print for a while, so this new edition is a welcome treat for those who didn’t get a chance to get one before.

Mahony and Ukolov are the creators of many gorgeous decks, almost all of which are out of print. People snap them up as soon as they leave the presses.

They’ve made the Bohemian Gothic Tarot, the Victorian Romantic, the Fantastic Menagerie, the Fairytale, and the Tarot of Prague.

The only one still available, at least for today, is their very pretty oracle deck, the Victorian Flower Oracle.

The Bohemian Cats should be ready by the end of the month. They’re taking pre-orders at Baba Studio now.

I’ve ordered one, and can’t wait till it arrives.

I’m going to try it out with my cat Carl. He’s complained in the past that my decks were too humancentric. I think he’s going to like this one.

#9 – The Hermit

You might find yourself wanting to spend some time alone today. It’s probably a good idea. Take time to look within and see what’s up inside your soul.

Have things been moving pretty fast lately? Don’t worry, it’s finally going to slow down a bit, giving you a moment to clean house and tie up loose ends.

Trust your own experience through this period. It’s through an examination of your own personal journey that you’ll discover your inner wisdom. You probably know a lot more then you give yourself credit for. But you might need some silence to notice.

Give yourself permission to be quiet. You won’t be missing anything by taking a break. It’ll only make things more fun when you finally re-emerge from your cave.

Kypris: The Aphrodite of Cyprus Revealed

November 23rd, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

The video below is a trailer for the documentary Kypris: The Aphrodite of Cyprus Revealed.

The whole film hasn’t actually been completed yet, but filmmaker Stavros Papageorghiou is hoping his IndieGoGo campaign will help get it done. And I hope so too, it looks really interesting.

The film is an exploration of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and fertility, who according to some legends, was born in Cyprus, where she’s still worshipped today.

Papageorghiou wants to shine light on the mythology, history, and archeological discoveries surrounding this beautiful ancient goddess, not to mention, take a look at her modern day worshippers.

#3 The Empress from the Rider Waite Smith Tarot

The Empress

In Tarot, the spirit of Aphrodite can be found in all of the female Major Arcana, but I think she’s most evident in the Empress, the Grand Mother of the deck.

The Empress represents love, abundance, and fertile creativity. She is beauty and compassion, nurturance, and celebration.

And not surprisingly, Venus is the planet astrologically aligned with the Empress, a planet named for the Roman incarnation of Aphrodite.

Take a look at Papageorghiou’s video and see what you think, or visit his page to learn more.

Moon in Scorpio – High Priestess in Death's Clothing

November 23rd, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

The High Priestess in Death's Clothes

The moon moves into Scorpio today and stays there until Friday.

If you translate this transit into the Tarot, you could say that the High Priestess is dressed as Death. She’s in the midst of a great transformation.

The Moon in Scorpio, or High Priestess in Death’s clothing, suggests a time when feelings run deep. The ability to end relationships that don’t work, or release stagnant emotions is accentuated.

If there’s a situation in your life that’s nearing its completion, especially if it’s emotional or relationship-oriented, this might be a good time to let it go. At least explore it with emotional clarity.

This isn’t a time to be afraid, but rather a time to face your fears with equanimity and intelligence.

You’ve got what it takes. Don’t back down from the scary stuff.

4 of Swords

Relax, stay calm and maybe even sleep on it.  There’s been a lot on your mind lately, and some of it has been quite heavy.  You need to slow down and reconnect with yourself.

Meditate on the changes you want in your life.   Figure out where your strengths lie and take that route to your goal.  It wouldn’t hurt to even reconsider the goal.  Are you sure you still want it?

And don’t forget your spirit.  Without it, the mental world can be pretty bleak.  Trust your dreams and keep in touch with your soul.  Make a truce with yourself – life isn’t always a battle.

A new sense of self and perspective on the world are available.  But you have to be quiet and still to find them.  Take today to figure it out.  You’ll be stronger in the long run.
