6 of Cups

It’s a wonderful day to say thank you – to your family, friends, and even your enemies.

Nostalgia and happy memories might fill your head and it’s worth remembering all the love there is around you.  Take pleasure in acknowledging it and grateful to extend it further.

Giving and receiving are two sides of the same joy.  Take pleasure in both and don’t be shy to tell people how much they mean to you.   You’ll probably be surprised by how much they love you back.

With close relationships, this is an especially important time to remember the history and strength of your time together. It’s these ties that have helped you through your most serious moments – both good and bad.

Don’t take them lightly, close friends really are special, and not as common as you might think.

Joel Bukiewicz and the Suit of Swords

March 18th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

The suit of swords doesn’t always have the best reputation in Tarot. It often represents mental battles, verbal assaults and/or general conflict and disruption.

And though typically considered intelligent, the Court Cards in this suit are sometimes stereotyped as arrogant, avaricious, and even mean.

But Joel Bukiewicz is a prime example of the more positive sides of the Sword mentality. He makes handmade knives and is the owner of Cut Brooklyn.

He’s intelligent, hard working, and clearly into sharp things, but he makes them to be used for good.

He started his career off as a fiction writer, which interestingly enough is another perfect job for the communicative Sword-type, but he gave it up when he discovered the joy in making knives.

Take a look at the Made by Hand video below to hear Bukiewicz describe his transition from a Page of Swords to the King he is today.

It takes work to be a master, but it’s definitely worth it.

4 of Swords

Relax, stay calm and maybe even sleep on it.  There’s been a lot on your mind lately, and some of it has been quite heavy.  You need to slow down and reconnect with yourself.

Meditate on the changes you want in your life.   Figure out where your strengths lie and take that route to your goal.  It wouldn’t hurt to even reconsider the goal.  Are you sure you still want it?

And don’t forget your spirit.  Without it, the mental world can be pretty bleak.  Trust your dreams and keep in touch with your soul.  Make a truce with yourself – life isn’t always a battle.

A new sense of self and perspective on the world are available.  But you have to be quiet and still to find them.  Take today to figure it out.  You’ll be stronger in the long run.

St. Patrick, Leprechauns, the Hierophant, and the Fool

March 17th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

Saint Patrick stained glass window from Cathedral of Christ the Light, Oakland, CA

Leprechauns and shamrocks might be what first come to mind when we think of St. Patrick’s Day, but as a Tarot reader I couldn’t help but notice how much St. Patrick himself looks like the Hierophant, at least in this stained glass rendition of him.

#5 The Hierophant from the Rider Waite Smith Tarot

And like the Hierophant, the patron saint of Ireland was very much concerned with tradition, religion, morality, and spreading the word he’d heard from on high.

St. Patrick’s energy is an interesting mix with that of the Leprechauns that usually share his stage. While he was known to be upright, and at least looks stern in this picture, Leprechauns are quite different.

#0 The Fool, Thoth Tarot by Frieda Harris and Aleister Crowley

They’re known for their mischievous ways, tricks and wishes, and all things unconventional.

It’s like the Fool is playing with the Master. And I for one think it’s great.

It keeps the Hierophant from gaining too much control with imposed structure, yet reigns in the wildest antics of the Fool. Kind of a perfect mix.

So today as you raise a glass of green beer to toast Saint Patrick and the Leprechauns, you might want to add an extra toast to the Hierophant and the Fool.

They might not be Irish, but they’ve got the spirit. Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone!

Moon in Aquarius – High Priestess in the Star's Clothing

High Priestess in Star's Clothing

High Priestess in Star's Clothing

The Moon moves into Aquarius today and stays there until Tuesday.

Described in Tarot cards, this transit would be like the High Priestess is dressed as the Star. In other words, her robes are gone and she’s naked as the bird in the tree behind her.

The Moon in Aquarius, or High Priestess in the Star’s clothing, can sometimes be emotionally stressful. Hope may be in the air, but it’s a cautious hope.

Emotionally you feel like sharing, bubbling over with dreams for the future. But your mind keeps getting in the way, reminding you that dreams can sometimes be nightmares.

Try not to spend what could be a nice time double guessing yourself or listing off all the reasons things could go wrong. They might. But they probably won’t.

Be real, but not a wet blanket. Rather than smothering your dreams, direct them with intelligence.

Prince of Disks

It’s a good time to get to work.  Nothing exciting, just keep moving forward step by step.  It’ll go a lot faster now that you’re seriously on your way.

Enjoy this building process.  You’re making steady progress.  If you keep moving like this, you’ll reach your goals soon.

And if you’re feeling a little dull because all you do is work, work and plan for more work, that’s okay.  That’s what the energy is right now and you might as well go with it.

Creating stability is worth the effort.  There’ll be plenty of time for fun soon enough.

Aleister Crowley’s Rite of Sol

Leila Waddell from the original production

If you’re a fan of the rock opera genre and Aliester Crowley, you might enjoy the new release by Eleusyve Productions.

The Rite of Sol is the fourth in a series of rock operas based on Crowley’s Rites of Eleusis, his ode to the seven astrological planets of antiquity.

Eleusyve Productions is a theatre group out of Seattle, Washington that’s committed to presenting all seven plays from the series.

They want to make them modern and accessible, yet retain the magic inherent in the originals.

The release of the Rite of Sol follows releases of the Rites of Mercury, Venus, and the Moon.

You can see a clip from the Rites of Venus DVD below. I think Crowley would have enjoyed it.

Ace of Cups

We had this card last Friday as well, but I’m happy to have it back…

Emotional renewal is the name of the game today.  A new way of feeling about something and/or somebody is about to emerge.  Perhaps you’re feeling it already – it’s like that first hint of spring or when a magnolia tree finally blossoms after a long cold winter.

Joy and hope are in the air and accessible to you.  Throw away any gloom you’ve been dragging around and wake up to the inspiration of postive emotions.  There’s a sense that anything can happen and it’s probably going to be good. Be receptive to the love that’s around you and give it back in kind.

Back in 2010, she was a guest on Beyond Worlds and we were fortunate enough to talk with her about her book. You can go to the show page to listen to that interview, or use the radio player below.

More recently though, Hennacy Powell spoke with Reality Sandwich as part of their Esoteric Voices series.

In the interview, she discusses her work with brain scans, the connections between dreaming, psychological conditions, and psychic experiences.

She also talks about how she came to be interested in this field in the first place.

Take a listen if you’ve got about fifteen minutes. It’s really interesting stuff.

Moon in Capricorn – High Priestess in the Devil's Clothing

March 15th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

The High Priestess dressed as the Devil

High Priestess as the Devil

The Moon moves into Capricorn today and will stay there until Saturday.

If you were to describe this transit using the Tarot, you might say that the High Priestess is wearing the Devil’s clothing. The virginal goddess has gotten downright beastly.

The Moon in Capricorn, or High Priestess in the Devil’s clothing, is a period of potential internal conflict. The physical world might seem to draw you away from what you typically believe to be right.

You might feel driven or compelled by behaviours and attitudes that go against the grain of your morality. It could be liberating or disturbing, depending on your secrets.

Whatever’s going on though, don’t be too hard on yourself. Get obsessions out of your system, and learn what you can about yourself while you do so.

You should be ready to move on soon. There’s nothing wrong with a little focused physicality. Just don’t get stuck.
