Timing in Tarot

May 15th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

There are a lot of different ways to incorporate timing into your Tarot readings. Some are more complicated than others, but all of them can work.

You can designate cards in a spread to represent time periods, like last week, this week, and next week.

You can assign seasons to the suits, perhaps winter for the Swords, spring for the Cups, summer for the Wands, and Pentacles for autumn.

If you use the Golden Dawn system, you might follow their astrological assignments to determine when something happened or will happen in the future.

To learn more about that system, take a look at Douglas Gibbs’ excellent tutorial on the subject at Tarot Eon.

Timing might also be determined by the numbers on the cards themselves. Maybe the Major cards could represent months, while the Minors represent weeks.

In that case the Hermit could signify 9 months down the road or in the past, while the 7 of Pentacles would suggest 7 weeks.

Combined with the seasonal suit system, the 7 of Pentacles would then be pointing to the 7th week of winter.

Another way to determine timing in Tarot is to use the spread demonstrated by Lunar Wisdom in the video below.

It’s basically a yes/no spread that she uses to look over periods of one week at a time. I really like it.

Take a look for yourself and try it out.

Moon in Aries – High Priestess in the Emperor's Clothing

May 15th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

High Priestess dressed as the Emperor

High Priestess dressed as Emperor

The Moon moves into Aries today and will stay there until Friday.

Translating this transit into Tarot Cards, it would be like the High Priestess is wearing the Emperor’s clothing. She’s in scarlet and armor and is ready for battle.

The Moon in Aries, or High Priestess in the clothing of the Emperor, is a time of intensified emotions. You might feel an increased desire to shape your own world.

Rather than sitting back in stillness, this transit encourages the loosening of emotional restrictions and the conscious expression of enthusiasm and/or passion.

It might be uncomfortable at first, but allow yourself to speak out loud. Take steps forward to let people know what you know and what you love.

Try to remain objective and open-minded while acting with determination and direction. It might sound impossible, but you can do both if you try.

#17 – The Star

Optimism and rejuvenation are the themes for the day.  Active generosity and compassion come easy so don’t hold back.  Give and you will receive.

Embrace the Universe’s capacity to provide you with what you need when you need it most.  That’s what miracles are and the Star is the goddess of miracles.

If things have been tough lately, now’s a time when you can finally lean back and take a bit of a break.  Surround yourself with as much beauty as you can.  It will help to replenish your soul.

Art, music, and the glory of the night sky are all worthy subjects of meditation.  Let them fill you with the inspiration you need for the next leg of your journey.

Wonderworks – some magic in Toronto

May 14th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

There are fewer and fewer occult and magic shops around these days. Even in big cities, the pickings are slim.

It’s that way in Toronto too, which is too bad. I miss them. Fortunately though, they’re not all gone.

Andrew McGregor’s The Hermit’s Lamp up on Vaughn Road is a new favourite of mine, and I’ll be writing about his upcoming Hermetica Art Show some time in the next couple of weeks.

But there’s also Wonderworks down on Harbord Street, owned and operated by Rochelle Holt. The Goddess is well represented at the shop through Holt’s large selection of Wiccan and Pagan items.

She also has Tarot books and decks, incense and crystals, herbs, oils, pendulums! All the magical goods you could possibly need.

In addition to the store, Wonderworks hosts classes and art shows. I’ve been to quite a few Tarot workshops there and they’ve all been great.

Monica Bodirsky is teaching a Tarot Intensive series there right now. It started last Thursday, but there are still five sessions left.

You can take all five, or sign up for individual modules – no prerequisites required.

To see what else is going on at Wonderworks, check out their calendar. There’s something magic every day.

6 of Cups

It’s a wonderful day to say thank you – to your family, friends, and even your enemies.

Nostalgia and happy memories might fill your head and it’s worth remembering all the love there is around you.  Take pleasure in acknowledging it and grateful to extend it further.

Giving and receiving are two sides of the same joy.  Take pleasure in both and don’t be shy to tell people how much they mean to you.   You’ll probably be surprised by how much they love you back.

With close relationships, this is an especially important time to remember the history and strength of your time together. It’s these ties that have helped you through your most serious moments – both good and bad.

Don’t take them lightly, close friends really are special, and not as common as you might think.

Moon in Pisces – High Priestess in the Moon's Clothing

May 13th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

High Priestess dressed in the moon's clothing

The Moon moves into Pisces today, and stays there until Tuesday.

Described in Tarot cards, this transit would be like the High Priestess is dressed as the Moon.

She’s lost her material body and has disappeared into the celestial body that usually rests at her feet.

The Moon in Pisces, or High Priestess dressed as the Moon, is a time of increased perception, ill-defined understanding and what might be described as night vision.

During this time you could find your dreams feel more real than your daylight hours and what’s not said is louder than what is.

Fears might grow like a boogieman under the bed, but if you just take a peek, they’re as likely to be dust bunnies as demons or ghosts.

Be still, aware and fearless. It might be dark outside, but if there was ever a time you can navigate the unknown, this is it. Listen, breathe, flow.

King of Cups from Georgie's Tarot

King of Cups

King of Cups

Compassion, emotional strength and mature love are key energies today.  The King of Cups understands well the joys and sacrifices involved in relationships of all kinds.

Concern yourself with how others are feeling, what they need for support and how you might help.  Through concern for the needs of others you might unexpectedly fulfill your own.

And if you know you’re needing some assistance yourself but have been afraid to ask – get over it.  Emotional generosity and support are there if you’re willing to let someone help.  But they have to know you need the help before they can offer it.

A Mother's Day Tarot Spread

May 12th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

In honour of Mother’s Day tomorrow I came up with a little Mother’s Day spread.

It can be used in relation to your own mother, or to anyone who has been a significant nurturing influence in your life, even a guy.

#3 The Empress from the Smith Waite Tarot

The grand mother in the Tarot is the Empress.

She speaks of creativity, empathy, nurturance, and compassion, traits that can be found in all of us regardless of sex or gender.

But moms seem especially good at mirroring the qualities of the Empress, and my own mom is truly a star.

I can’t thank her enough and I can only wish that everyone might have such an influence in their life.

So thank you Mom!! And to all the Moms out there, thank you!! May your day be filled with flowers, sunshine and lots of love!

Mothers’ Day Spread:

1. What have I learnt from my mother?

2. How might I best incorporate that lesson into my life?

3. How might I acknowledge and or thank my mother for this gift?

4. How can I get in touch with my own maternal nature?

5. How can I share the best of my maternal nature with others?

7 of Disks from Georgie's Tarot

7 of Disks

Today you might find yourself simply working and waiting. You’ve been trying hard but it probably feels like there’s little to show for it.  Keep your chin up!  You are actively creating change in your life, but it takes time.

Try not to get down on yourself while the process continues.  Commitment means sticking through the dull, tough times to reach your goal.  You’re well on your way and it would be a shame not to keep going.  In fact, the hardest part now is not to give up for fear of failure.

There’s still work ahead, but you’re going in the right direction.  Keep plugging away and you will succeed.
