Magician as Hermit

Mercury moves into Virgo today, and stays there until August 8.

Through the eyes of the Tarot, this transit is like the Magician is wearing the Hermit’s clothes. He’s left his garden and is trekking through the snow.

The Magician has inspirational power. He’s focused, clear, intent on his goal. And he gets others excited about it with him.

He’s a master communicator, spinning words like silk, able to convince anyone of pretty much anything.

The Magician is quick, fresh, and eager to discover where his next idea leads. If it gets dull he moves on. There are infinite possibilities, no need to get stuck in anything that doesn’t inspire.

The Hermit, on the other hand, is an old man, wise and slow. He’s not at all concerned with being quick, fresh or starting new. He’s much more interested in digging in and seeing what he’s already got.

His wisdom comes from experience, earned day by day through a long life. Nothing much surprises him. He’s seen it all, both within himself, and in the world outside.

The Hermit’s a solitary walker, though not at all unfriendly. If you’re interested in where he’s going, he’s happy to have you along.

But he won’t push, and isn’t particularly interested in convincing you of anything, except maybe to look within yourself to find what you need.

The Magician has to really slow down when he’s dressed as the Hermit, and it’s not always easy for him. But he likes the meditative atmosphere of the mountain, and is confident he’ll leave it knowing something more about himself.

Mercury in Virgo, or the Magician wearing the Hermit’s clothes, is a time of intense internal clarity. You know what you know, and can see it with fresh eyes.

It’s a good time to clear out stale old perspectives. Shine light on your inner wisdom and don’t be afraid to let others know what you’ve found.

There’s a tension now between the old and the new. Use it to dig through past ideas and experiences. Not for nostalgia’s sake, but in order to figure out what’s worthy enough to revitalize, and what might as well be discarded.

And try not to be frustrated if you have to move slower than your thoughts want to go, especially when Mercury goes retrograde on August 2. Sometimes we just have to slow down a little to really figure things out.

Magician as Strength

Mercury moves into Leo today and stays there until July 28th.

Looking at this transit through the eyes of the Tarot, it would be like the Magician is wearing Strength’s clothing. He’s still floating his lemniscates, but now he’s wearing a dress.

The Magician is dynamic, innovative and charismatic. He gets things started and keeps them interesting.
He’s a master communicator, a brilliant theoretician, and at times an unscrupulous trickster.

The Magician inspires us to see the world as the birthplace of all potential. Magic is everywhere, if only we open our eyes.

Strength is also dynamic and charismatic. She fears little, and knows well that the ego is our biggest adversary. It’s not to be destroyed, just directed to best effect.

She is creativity, lust, the power to move with passion towards our goals.

Strength has the attitude that she will succeed, primarily because she has the courage to act, and the capacity to control her actions.

Despite the dress, the Magician enjoys this position, using it as a time to fill his ideas with the fire necessary to make them real. His tongue turns golden in the sun.

Mercury in Leo, or the Magician in Strength’s clothing is a time of energetic and maybe even exhilarating communication.

During this cycle, it’s easy to express your ideas with enthusiasm, and you’re encouraged to do so. Don’t be shy, but try not to walk all over anyone else’s sunshine.

Watch out for ego talk, either from yourself or others. Everyone likes a good storyteller, but boasters are less welcome.

Let yourself be inspired and your desires be clear and focused. When innocent passion is directed by an intelligent will, the possibilities are infinite.

Magician as Charioteer

Mercury moves into Cancer today, and stays there until July 2nd.

If we translate this transit into the Tarot, it would be like the Magician is wearing the clothes of the Charioteer. He’s hit the road in some pretty snazzy armour.

The Magician is really good at getting things started. He’s a man of ideas and focused attention.

His inspirational thinking can move one to greatness, and his ability to manifest his will is unparalleled.

The Magician communicates with brilliance and can spin your head with how fast he can talk. He can convince you of anything, whether he believes it or not.

The Chariot can move pretty fast itself. And it moves with determination, like one’s will in motion.

The Charioteer is a strategist and a warrior. With careful planning, he’s willing to take on any battle, confident that few others have his ability to fight to the end.

Perseverance is one of his strong points, and he has the capacity to help others find their own power to keep going.

The Magician is okay in this position. He’s comfortable on the road, and can hold a sceptre as easily as a wand.

Mercury in Cancer, or the Magician wearing the Charioteer’s clothing, is an excellent time to turn your ideas into action.

Inspiration abounds, as does the strength to follow through on your commitments.

Don’t give up if the going gets tough, or communication gets murky. Just recalibrate and try again.

Magician as the Lovers' Angel

Mercury moves into Gemini today, and stays there until June 16th.

Looking at this transit through the eyes of the Tarot, it would be like the Magician has taken on the clothes of the Lovers’ Angel. He’s put down his tools and put on some wings.

The Magician is inspirational. He sets things in motion, is the man of all beginnings.

He has vision and clarity. He’s the type of guy who ignites the imagination and gets you to believe that absolutely anything is possible. Magic is real.

The Magician flies solo, but his communication skills are extraordinary. A brilliant interpreter, he’s able to translate and transform his will into reality.

The Lovers are also about communication, especially between two people, or more.

They represent consolidation, commitment and union. Mirroring each other, they reflect opposites joining as one.

Flexible in mind and spirit, the Lovers look at the world from as many perspectives as possible. But when they do finally make a decision, they take it as seriously as the Angel who hangs above them.

The Magician enjoys playing the part of the Lovers’ Angel. He likes the sun behind him and having a chance to bless a commitment. After all, he knows it’s the will that starts the way.

Magician as Hierophant

Mercury moves into Taurus today, and stays there until June 2nd.

Translated into Tarot, this transit would be like the Magician is wearing the Hierophant’s clothing. He’s replaced his light robes for heavy holy vestments.

The Magician communicates, directs, and initiates. He’s quick, inventive and inspirational.

His speed of thought and unique perspective makes up for lack of consistency. Overly structured paradigms only dampen his creative brilliance.

The Magician relishes freedom, sunlight and the opportunity to start something fresh. He works outside and likes to have as many tools at his disposal as possible.

The Hierophant also communicates, directs and initiates. But he does it from a place of structured morality, a throne and a church.

He likes to be in charge, and sees his role as conductor of the faith. Consistency and tradition are essentials.

Unless it comes from the Hierophant himself, anything new should be questioned. Anything outside the box should be brought in.

Mercury in Taurus, or the Magician wearing the Hierophant’s clothing is a time when communication might take a turn towards the spiritual, and the rules of morality.

Tradition, faith, and religious world views are all open for discussion and some conflict might be expected between new ideas and old.
