Confidence and The Fool

#0 The Fool - Rider Waite Smith Tarot

While watching this School of Life video called Confidence, I couldn’t help but think of Tarot’s Fool.

His attitude is one of supreme confidence, not because he knows it all, or has solutions for everything that might come up, but because he’s willing to try things out, willing to take that leap with the faith that he’ll be okay, whatever happens next.

The Fool doesn’t wait around to be sure that every last detail is in place before taking the next step. If he waits for perfection, he might never move. And though things might not work out exactly as planned, the Fool knows for sure that if he doesn’t get moving, there’s not much chance he’ll get any further than he already is.

So take a look at Confidence, then get out there and try making a Fool’s leap of your own. And if for some reason you take a spill, just do what the Fool would do … get up, dust yourself off, and have the confidence to try again.

#0 – The Fool

This is a great day to take the leap and do something different.  It might seem crazy and you have no idea how it’s going to turn out, or maybe even how you got on this path in the first place, but here you are.  It’s time to make your move and do so without fear.

The Fool card isn’t telling you to be an idiot, but rather to stop double thinking yourself all the time and worrying that every single thing is in order before you can make a move.

Life isn’t really that logical.  There’s no way to prepare for all eventualities, no matter how smart you are.  Do what you can and let the universe take care of the bigger story.

The Fool’s Journey

October 26th, 2015 § 0 comments § permalink

#0 The Fool - Rider Waite Smith TarotThe Fool moving from the beginning of the Major Arcana on through the other 21 cards can be seen as a story of progressive enlightenment.

The Fool starts at Zero, where everything is not much more than unknown potential, and nothing is quite solid, on through the other cards, where he learns all sorts of life lessons, eventually ending up at #21, the World, where he finally gets it. By that stage, everything makes sense, and after some celebration, the Fool’s ready to start the trip all over again.

Looked at from this perspective, the story of the Major Arcana is simply another example of the Hero’s Journey, as described most eloquently by Joseph Campbell, though Iskander Krayenbosch (creator of the video below) does a good job as well.

Take a look at Krayenbosch’s The Hero’s Journey to see a quick run through of the 12 major stages of the Hero’s quest for enlightenment. And if you’re a Tarot reader, see what cards you think might belong to each step.

Every Town Needs a Fool

RWS_Tarot_00_Fool

The Tarot Fool has come to life in the small town of Conwy, Wales which recently appointed its first resident Jester in over 700 years.

According to rawstory.com, at the beginning of August, Russel Erwood was installed as the Fool of Conwy, and dubbed ‘Erwyd le Fol’ during an official celebration involving falconry, knights, and a parade.

To get the job, Erwyd had to prove himself by successfully completing three tasks. He had to juggle daggers while blindfolded, balance a sword on his chin, and make a gold coin disappear.

He did them all and more, finishing up his routine with a trick known as The Burning Brushes of Beelzebub where he balanced a burning barbeque on a wooden pole down at the town’s quayside.

Who could ask for more!

The last official Fool of Conwy was ‘Tom le Fol’, appointed by King Edward I of England back in 1294. Erwyd’s work duties will be very similar to his predecessor Tom’s – juggling, singing songs, telling stories, and performing magic tricks.
