I was thinking it would be nice to have a Mother’s Day theme today, so I took a look at my Rider Waite Smith deck to see where the mothers were.
There’s quite a few women that seem to be acting like moms.
There’s women with children in the 10 of Pentacles, the 10 of Cups, the 6 of Swords and in #20, Judgment.
But though children aren’t part of the picture, the four Queens and the Empress might be considered the major symbols for ‘mother’ in the Tarot.
And looking at it today, it strikes me that each Queen might represent one of four elemental dimensions of the Empress.

Queen of Cups
The Queen of Cups is water, the Empress’ emotions. She’s the expression of love, how she shows her children she cares.
She is the imagination, the flow of feminine devotion.

Queen of Swords
The Queen of Swords is air, the Empress’ mind. She’s intellect and mental power, the ability to definitively draw the line.
She’s a decider in the family, and representative of feminine authority.

Queen of Disks
And the Queen of Pentacles is earth, the Empress’ grounding. She’s concrete plans and generous action.
She’s feminine physicality at its best.

Queen of Wands
And finally, the Queen of Wands. She’s the Empress’ fire. She’s the passion to encourage, inspire and protect her young like a lion.
She’s the feminine creative force.

#3 The Empress
The Empress embodies all of the elements, and all of the Queens.
You see the earth represented in the wheat growing at her feet, the water is in the stream beside her, and the fire is in her pillows.
The element of air can be seen in her royal mace, a symbol of her power.
You don’t have to be a mother to embody these energies. In fact, you don’t even have to be a woman.
But if you are mom, today these cards are especially dedicated to you.
Happy Mother’s Day Ladies!
And to my Mom in particular, a special Hello and Happy Day to you!

Queen of Wands
Be yourself and be it fully. This is a day for you to shine. You know yourself and you’ve been true to your soul. It’s always worth it and now you’re remembering why.
As you harness your energy to create your will, do so with compassion. Remember what you suffered to get to your present state. Have compassion for those that are still struggling. They can use your inspiration, but remember your strength. Be careful not to burn them.
Take pride in your self and your work, but don’t get carried away. You’re most beautiful when you’re humble, while letting your fire soar.

The Cat Now Called Carl
A little black cat has joined my family!! As of today, we don’t yet know his name, but the decision-making process has begun. He’s a boy, we know that much. And I’m guessing that he’s about 8 weeks old. I’m crazy about him!!!
Though I adore him now, my first reaction to the thought of a new pet was – NO! I’ve been down this road before. It’s full of fluffy good times for sure, but I don’t need my crystal ball to see couch clawing, vase toppling, wire chewing and bad cat attitude in my future. Of course I took him anyway.
Not that there wasn’t a certain amount of pressure …. starting with the psychic community. When I first met the kitty, I was just about to go on air with Psychic Friends Live. He was floating around in my head and I, perhaps idiotically, mentioned to Storm and the audience that I was thinking of taking in a little cat I just met.
As you can imagine, if you ask a chatroom full of psychics whether or not you should adopt a black kitten, you get a resounding YES! And my friend and cohost Storm was the worst of the lot. All afternoon there were messages left.
‘Take the cat.” “Have you taken the cat yet.” ‘That cat better be in your house by now.” “Why aren’t you answering the phone – you better be out getting the cat.” He was relentless.
But it wasn’t only Storm, our listeners and my friends who were encouraging me to take the little guy. My Tarot deck got into the act too.

Queen of Wands with her Black Cat
One of my Rider-Waite-Smith decks was on hand and I asked it, “Should I take the cat?.” The card I pulled was the Queen of Wands. A little black cat sat in front of the queen. ‘What a silly question,’ it said, ‘of course you should.’
So that was that. And now I have a little familiar who’s waiting for his name. Sweet sweet sweet. I’m glad I took the cat.
