Mars in Taurus – The Tower's Lightening Strikes the Hierophant's Throne

Tower Striking the Hierophant's Throne

Lightening Strikes the Hierophant

Mars moves into Taurus today and stays there until June 21st.

Looking at this transit through the eyes of the Tarot, it’s like the Tower’s lightening has struck the Hierophant’s throne. And his acolytes are tumbling down.

The Tower is always a surprise. Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, something shocking proves you’re wrong.

We build towers for defense, protection and a higher perspective. But if we’re not careful, they can easily become prisons. Prisons so high, they become lightening rods.

The Tower in the Tarot provides liberation from those elements in our life that have become too solid, unyielding, or concrete. It’s a destructive force, but one that can bring enlightenment along with it.

The Hierophant, on the other hand, is much more comfortable when the world feels grounded. He likes things straight ahead, steady and controlled.

He is what tradition is all about. He’s the masculine moral authority, and rules are very important to him. He doesn’t typically look well on surprises.

But he does appreciate enlightenment. In fact that’s why he’s so concerned with the rules. He uses ritual and tradition to find a path to the divine.

The Tower might come announced to the Hierophant‘s chambers, but the old master won’t likely be too disturbed. He’s more apt to use the situation as a spiritual lesson, like he’d been expecting it all along.

When Mars moves into Taurus, and the Hierophant’s stone throne is struck by lightening, we might find that what we thought was certain, no longer seems so obvious.

Belief structures might shift, and rules that used to make sense might now feel outmoded.

Old ways of seeing the spirit, religion or traditional structures are all up for review. As could be our perceptions about who really has moral authority.

Don’t be afraid of letting tradition for tradition’s sake fall away. And if an idol or two falls with it, that’s all right too.

It might be a bit chaotic for a moment, but this is your chance to find faith in yourself. Use it as an opportunity to start being your own last word.

Moon in Virgo – High Priestess in the Hermit's Clothing

The High Priestess wearing the Hermit's clothing

High Priestess as Hermit

The Moon moves into Virgo today and will be there until Friday.

From a Tarot perspective, you might think of this transit as the High Priestess wearing the Hermit’s clothes. She’s putting on her cowl.

The Moon in Virgo, or High Priestess in the Hermit’s clothing, is a time for practical, quiet reflection. Seeking the advice of an expert, and listening carefully to what they have to say could be worthwhile.

Or maybe someone will be asking you for your advice.

Your home is more important now than the outside world. Start thinking how to make it more practical. You might not be ready to do the work just yet, but this is a great time to plan.

Emotionally, it’s a time of calm. Perfect for listening and reflecting rather than acting out in passion. Take your time. There’s no rush.

Study, organization, contemplation, solitude, emotional self-reflection. Don’t be afraid to be alone right now. There’s lot’s to do on your own.

It looks like it’ll be a sweet day.  Open communication full of love and tenderness.  This is a day to make sure you tell the people you love how much they mean to you.

If you’re starting a romantic relationship, or in one, it can be especially delicious.  Be romantic and enjoy each other.  It’s a time of beauty, peace and innocence, the reason we love love so much.

If you’re not feeling romantic, take the energy and let yourself simply express how much you care about those around you.  It will be most powerful if you tell them one-to-one.  Let them know they’re special, it’ll make you feel great too.

World Tarot Day – May 25, 2011

World Tarot Day

World Tarot Day

May 25th is officially World Tarot Day. How will you make it special?

•Get a reading or give a reading.
•Buy a deck or give one away.
•Randomly choose a chapter from your favourite Tarot book and read it. Or try it with a book you’ve not yet started.
•Make up a spread, or throw your cards on the floor and read only the ones that fall face down.
•Join a Tarot group, or organize a meet-up in your own area, or on-line.
•You can start a Tarot journal, paint a Tarot card, or listen to a Tarot podcast (can I recommend Beyond Worlds.)

There’s so many things you can do to celebrate. But one thing for sure, check out the official World Tarot Day website.

Festivities are already in high gear. You can take part in the World’s Largest Tarot Reading, or submit a short video to the Tarot VideoWall. Just finish the sentence, ‘Tarot is ….”

And if you like finishing sentences, why not help save the Fool’s dog. Complete the sentence, “I believe the Fool’s Dog must stay on his journey because …”

This activity is kind of important. There’s talk that if the good people at World Tarot Day don’t get enough responses, the Fool’s Dog might just retire. What then?

And then there’s the Fool’s Fair. It’ll only be happening on World Tarot Day and it’s shrouded in secrecy.

There’ll be special offers, prizes, education and promotion available for only a few moments at a time throughout the day, all day.

It’s going to be fun! Happy Tarot Everyone!

6 of Cups

It’s a wonderful day to say thank you – to your family, friends, and even your enemies.

Nostalgia and happy memories might fill your head and it’s worth remembering all the love there is around you.  Take pleasure in acknowledging it and grateful to extend it further.

Giving and receiving are two sides of the same joy.  Take pleasure in both and don’t be shy to tell people how much they mean to you.   You’ll probably be surprised by how much they love you back.

With close relationships, this is an especially important time to remember the history and strength of your time together. It’s these ties that have helped you through your most serious moments – both good and bad.

Don’t take them lightly, close friends really are special, and not as common as you might think.

Stoney Machete – a good friend

Stoney Machete in the Sun photo by Kelly Catchings

Stoney Machete

In honour of my sweet dog friend Stoney Machete, who passed away yesterday, I’m reposting a story I posted on his birthday back in 2009….
__________________________________________
Stone and I have shared some good times. Hours together at the office, adventures at the Bat Cave, trips to Pioneer Town, countless games of drag and tug.

We’ve crisscrossed North America together and said hello and good-bye at airports more times than I can remember. I love Stoney.

But we did have a bit of an awkward start to our friendship. I met the Stone when he was just six months old and all about chewing.

I know it’s not right to take dog behaviour personally, but I couldn’t help but notice the only things he chewed belonged to me.

My friend, his very best human, told me I was imagining it, but I wasn’t, and Stone knew I was on to him.

5 of Wands from the Rider Waite Smith Tarot

5 of Wands

One night we arrived home to see my entire Thoth Tarot deck strewn across the floor, starting in the living room and trailing in a straight line right through to the bedroom.

I was wildly upset as I followed the card path. When I got to the end I couldn’t believe my eyes. The last card in the trail was the 5 of Wands – Strife. And it was chewed to shreds.

Since that was the only card with any damage on it, I couldn’t help but take it as a message. Stoney had decided to clear the air and bring our petty arguing about who was chewing what out into the open.

And not only that, he was going to end the fighting right then.

Of course I let him know I wasn’t happy with his method of communication, but wow was he good. We became fast friends from there.

And about the deck, since it was my very first one, given to me by my mother, I decided ‘Strife be damned,’ and kept it. In fact, I use it all the time.

Purists might be disturbed by my choice, but I believe if the energy of the 5 of Wands needs to come out in a reading, it’ll find a way.

It might be through a combination of other cards, or by myself and a client ‘magically’ choosing a different deck for that reading. No harm done.

Stoney and I live in different cities right now so I’ve had to pass my birthday message on to him through his best human.

But I thought I’d give it a go psychically as well, and of course chose Tarot as my medium.

Out loud I said “I love Stoney Mac!’ and pulled a card.

#8 Strength from the Rider Waite Smith Tarot

Strength

The card I got was ‘Strength’. Pictured is a young maiden playing with a gorgeous golden lion.

Quite obviously the young maiden is myself (ha ha) and the golden lion no other than Stoney Machete aka The Golden Boy of Hollywood.

How fabulous! He sent me a picture of the two of us hanging out. Stone’s still got the Tarot Touch!!
________________________________________________

And he always will. I love you Stoney.

Moon in Leo – High Priestess in Strength's Clothing

The High Priestess in Strength's Clothing

High Priestess as Strength

The Moon moves into Leo today and stays there until Wednesday.

Translated into Tarot cards, this transit would be like the High Priestess is wearing Strength’s clothing. She’s thrown off her heavy cape and is spending some time outside with her lion.

The Moon in Leo, or High Priestess in Strength’s clothing is potentially a time of emotional power. Something beautiful that’s usually under wraps can finally be revealed.

The silence is broken. Quiet wisdom and passion can be united. During this time, it might be difficult to keep your ideas to yourself. But why should you?

Try finding an outlet for plans you’ve been sitting on? This is an opportunity to shine if you’re not over-burdened by self-consciousness.

It might feel a little uncomfortable at first, but letting your wilder side out right now could be positive. The sun isn’t always shining. Take advantage of it when it does.

King of Disks

We just had this card on Friday, but it’s back again already ….

Physically things will likely be pretty good today.  You’re probably feeling strong and have enough of everything that you really need.  You might even have more than enough and can give some away.

If you do, take advantage of this period to be generous.  You’ve done wonderfully in building your world, see if you can help someone else do the same.

Prosperity and stability are highlighted.   Enjoy the fruits of your labour.  It’s been your steady steps and sometimes less than exciting work that has brought you to where you are.  Congratulations, this is what the work was for.

Mothers in the Tarot

May 8th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

I was thinking it would be nice to have a Mother’s Day theme today, so I took a look at my Rider Waite Smith deck to see where the mothers were.

There’s quite a few women that seem to be acting like moms.

There’s women with children in the 10 of Pentacles, the 10 of Cups, the 6 of Swords and in #20, Judgment.

But though children aren’t part of the picture, the four Queens and the Empress might be considered the major symbols for ‘mother’ in the Tarot.

And looking at it today, it strikes me that each Queen might represent one of four elemental dimensions of the Empress.

Queen of Cups from the Rider Waite Smith tarot

Queen of Cups

The Queen of Cups is water, the Empress’ emotions. She’s the expression of love, how she shows her children she cares.

She is the imagination, the flow of feminine devotion.

Queen of Swords from the Rider Waite Smith tarot

Queen of Swords

The Queen of Swords is air, the Empress’ mind. She’s intellect and mental power, the ability to definitively draw the line.

She’s a decider in the family, and representative of feminine authority.

Queen of Disks from the Rider Waite Smith tarot

Queen of Disks

And the Queen of Pentacles is earth, the Empress’ grounding. She’s concrete plans and generous action.

She’s feminine physicality at its best.

Queen of Wands from the Rider Waite Smith tarot

Queen of Wands

And finally, the Queen of Wands. She’s the Empress’ fire. She’s the passion to encourage, inspire and protect her young like a lion.

She’s the feminine creative force.

#3 The Empress from the Rider Waite Smith tarot

#3 The Empress

The Empress embodies all of the elements, and all of the Queens.

You see the earth represented in the wheat growing at her feet, the water is in the stream beside her, and the fire is in her pillows.

The element of air can be seen in her royal mace, a symbol of her power.

You don’t have to be a mother to embody these energies. In fact, you don’t even have to be a woman.

But if you are mom, today these cards are especially dedicated to you.

Happy Mother’s Day Ladies!

And to my Mom in particular, a special Hello and Happy Day to you!

2 of Swords

This is a day to take your time and think things through – calmly and quietly. Trust your inner voice and let silence be your friend. There’s probably a lot of emotion behind your thoughts these days. Try to keep balance.

Make sure you’re not overthinking things. It’s all about listening to both your logic and your intuition. Both have something to say to you right now. Try not to let your emotions sweep you away or your thoughts crush you down. You’ll know what to do when you need to do it. No need to act right now, just sit.

Mental peace is the energy you’ll discover in your quietude. Keep still. Keep calm. Your thoughts may be heavy, but you’re more than strong enough to hold them.
