#0 – The Fool

This is a great day to take the leap and do something different.  It might seem crazy and you have no idea how it’s going to turn out, or maybe even how you got on this path in the first place, but here you are.  It’s time to make your move and do so without fear.

The Fool card isn’t telling you to be an idiot, but rather to stop double thinking yourself all the time and worrying that every single thing is in order before you can make a move.

Life isn’t really that logical.  There’s no way to prepare for all eventualities, no matter how smart you are.  Do what you can and let the universe take care of the bigger story.

The Third Annual Esoteric Book Conference – seattle, sept 10 and 11

Raimundus Lullus Alchemic Page

If you’re an occult book fan and happen to be in Seattle this coming weekend, check out the third annual Esoteric Book Conference, one of the biggest gatherings of its kind in the US.

Founded by William Kiesel, publishing director of Ouroboros Press, it’s the place to find books on every kind of esoteric wisdom, including of course, alchemy, magic, and astrology.

According to Kiesel, the conference focuses more on the books themselves than the belief systems they espouse. But a quick look at the presentations, art show, and performances suggests it’s a more magical event than he might be admitting.

Presenters include authors of books like Making The Mundane Magical: Aleister Crowley’s Magus Initiation and the Practice of Esoteric Hermeneutics and The Ladies of the Lodge: Women of Today’s Golden Dawn Speak on the Practice of Magick. I bet they’ll be talking about more than just bookbinding.

The seminars look fascinating, but if you only want to spend your afternoon browsing through all the incredible books, the book fair is free, and open to the public.

Moon in Capricorn – High Priestess in the Devil's Clothing

The High Priestess dressed as the Devil

High Priestess as the Devil

The Moon moves into Capricorn today and will stay there until Thursday.

If you were to describe this transit using the Tarot, you might say that the High Priestess is wearing the Devil’s clothing. The virginal goddess has gotten downright beastly.

The Moon in Capricorn, or High Priestess in the Devil’s clothing, is a period of potential internal conflict. The physical world might seem to draw you away from what you typically believe to be right.

You might feel driven or compelled by behaviours and attitudes that go against the grain of your morality. It could be liberating or disturbing, depending on your secrets.

Whatever’s going on though, don’t be too hard on yourself. Get obsessions out of your system, and learn what you can about yourself while you do so.

You should be ready to move on soon. There’s nothing wrong with a little focused physicality. Just don’t get stuck.

#6 – The Lovers

Are there choices to be made?  Decisions you’ve put off for another time?  Well this is the time.  The Lovers card asks us to finally make up our minds – either commit or get out now.

On a personal level, the Lovers reminds us to balance the opposites within ourselves.  Are your ying and yang in sync?  Does your conscious experience compliment your unconscious dream state or do they seem at war?  Are you living a life that satisfies your soul? Heavy questions, but this is a great day to think about them.  In fact, you might find it difficult not to.

This is a serious commitment you’re thinking about.  To help you make up your mind, ask yourself which direction brings you closer to your soul’s call. You probably already know the answer.

The Almadel Project: Creating a True Magical Relic

September 5th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

If you’re interested in helping to produce a magical Almadel, and maybe get one for yourself, this is the project for you.

The Almadel Project: Creating a True Magical Relic is a Kickstarter project created by Jason Augustus Newcomb.

In case you didn’t know (I didn’t), an Almadel is a wax tablet engraved with magical names and characters that rests on four candles and holds a crystal ball.

Used with mastic incense, it’s meant to invoke a specific group of angels, as described in the Lesser Key of Solomon: Book 4: Ars Almadel.

It’s all very detailed magical stuff that you can read about on Newcomb’s page.

He’s taking it very seriously and is trying to make the tool as authentic as possible, or at least within the spirit of the original grimoire.

He’s also writing a short book describing the history of the Almadel, how it can be used for communicating with angels, and some general tips on the best way to engage in such communication.

Take a look at Newcomb’s video and see what you think. He’s already raised the money he was looking for and is definitely going ahead with the project.

But you might want to donate anyway. There’s only four days left in the campaign, and where else can you get a personalized angel communicator with instructions on how to use it?

6 of Cups

It’s a wonderful day to say thank you – to your family, friends, and even your enemies.

Nostalgia and happy memories might fill your head and it’s worth remembering all the love there is around you.  Take pleasure in acknowledging it and grateful to extend it further.

Giving and receiving are two sides of the same joy.  Take pleasure in both and don’t be shy to tell people how much they mean to you.   You’ll probably be surprised by how much they love you back.

With close relationships, this is an especially important time to remember the history and strength of your time together. It’s these ties that have helped you through your most serious moments – both good and bad.

Don’t take them lightly, close friends really are special, and not as common as you might think.

Psychic Challenges Fortune-telling Ban in Alexandria, Louisiana

September 4th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

Alexandria, Louisiana, 3rd Street

Downtown Alexandria

Rachel Adams, a psychic living in Alexandria, Louisiana, is taking her new town to court.

She’s trying to overturn a fortune-telling ban that prohibits her from operating her business, Readings by Faith.

When Adams moved to Alexandria last year, she applied for a business license to open her shop. Not only was she refused a license, she was cited by police and faced a potential $500 fine or 12 months in jail.

According to Section 15-127 of the city code, even if you’re doing it for free, psychic and Tarot readings are illegal in Alexandria.

The Town Talk newspaper reports that it’s unlawful …

for any person to engage in the business or practice of palmistry, card reading, astrology, fortunetelling, phrenology, mediums or activities of a similar nature within the city, regardless of whether a fee is charged directly or indirectly, or whether the services are rendered without a charge.

Adams sees her psychic work as an expression of her religion, and according to her attorney, Tommy Davenport, the ordinance is suppressing her ability to practice her faith.

Members of the Alexandria Council, said that they were surprised by the suit, and wished Adams had approached them first before filing.

They said that they would have considered an amendment to the ordinance rather than trying to defend it in court.

Adams’ attorney, however, said that due to the criminal charge against his client, the lawsuit was the best way to proceed.

And he may have been right. Just two hours after presenting four similar cases where fortune-telling bans were overturned, charges against Adams were dropped.

Davenport hopes it’s a good sign that the ordinance itself will soon be overturned. I hope so too.

King of Cups

Compassion, emotional strength and mature love are key energies today.  The King of Cups understands well the joys and sacrifices involved in relationships of all kinds.

Concern yourself with how others are feeling, what they need for support and how you might help.  Through concern for the needs of others you might unexpectedly fulfill your own.

And if you know you’re needing some assistance yourself but have been afraid to ask – get over it.  Emotional generosity and support are there if you’re willing to let someone help.  But they have to know you need the help before they can offer it.

Niki de Saint Phalle's Tarot Garden – revisited

September 3rd, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

I’ve posted about it before, but I came across another video, so I’m going to post about it again – Niki de St Phalle’s Tarot Garden outside Capalbio, Tuscany.

Enormous Tarot sculptures created by the fabulous Niki de Saint Phalle fill the garden with magic and colour. It’s incredible. I really want to see it in person.

But until I can, I’ll have to make due with pictures and videos other people have been good enough to post.

And if you haven’t already, take a look at the videos on the garden’s official website. You can watch Niki de Saint Phalle herself talk about her creation.

I have to get there soon.

Moon in Sagittarius – High Priestess in Temperance's Clothing

The High Priestess dressed in Temperance's Clothing

High Priestess as Temperance

The Moon moves into Sagittarius today and will be there until Tuesday.

Looking at it through the eyes of the Tarot, you can describe this transit as being like the High Priestess wearing Temperance’s clothing. She’s dressed like an angel.

The Moon in Sagittarius, or High Priestess in Temperance’s clothing, indicates a time when intellect, practicality, emotions and passion can work together in relative ease.

What’s normally only an idea might find its way to becoming real. Even-tempered inspiration and emotional playfulness can create what look like miracles.

Take this time to bring your emotions in line with your passions. And play with your most serious ideas. It’s in combining the unexpected that you’ll likely find gold.
