#5 El Sumo Sacerdote from the Dali Universal Tarot

Given that the new Pope, Francis I has been in the news so much lately, I asked my Dali Universal Tarot ‘what is the nature of Pope Francis I?”

As if to answer, ‘Well, obviously …,” the card I got was #5, El Sumo Sacerdote, The High Priest. In other words, the Pope.

Ha ha. I think my cards are playing with me.

A Little Circus Magic

November 17th, 2013 § 0 comments § permalink

Take a look at this retro-themed Circus deck by Doug Thornsjo called Tarot of the Zirkus Mägi.

Though Thornsjo had long intended to create a deck of his own, this one came about almost by accident.

He was writing a fantasy novel called See Them Dance, in which one of the characters is a telepath and fortune teller. It occurred to him that she needed her own deck, and next thing you know, the Tarot of the Zirkus Mägi was born.

At the moment it’s a limited edition (only 300 will be printed) Majors only deck, but Thornsjo is planning on making it a full 78-card deck soon. I want one!

Watch the video below to see some of the cards, and visit the Tarot of Zirkus Mägi project page to learn more.

You Don't Have To Be An Angel …

Johann_Sebastian_Bach

Over at the Big Think website, there’s a video of conductor John Eliot Gardiner, author of the new book Bach: Music in the Castle of Heaven, talking about Johann Sebastian Bach.

In his description of the famed composer, Gardiner reminds us that one need not be an angel to channel the divine.

As I was listening, it made me think of one of my own favourite rebels – Aleister Crowley.

Aleister Crowley

Though I don’t believe he was as wicked as he liked his reputation to be, there were definitely elements of his personality that would have been very difficult to deal with.

Thoth Devil

Despite that, the Thoth Tarot he created with artist Lady Frieda Harris is still my very favourite Tarot deck ever. It’s simply brilliant.

I think Crowley did somehow manage to channel something divine, though like Bach, there’s no doubt he himself was a bit of a devil.

The Cheimonette Tarot

Here’s a sweet deck-in-the-making by Eden GallanterThe Cheimonette Tarot.

Cheimonette is a word Gallanter came up with by mixing the Greek word cheimon, meaning storm, with the French suffix ette, for little.

Together they become cheimonette, or little storm, and refer to the burst of inspirational chaos one experiences in the creation of art, the very energy Gallanter clearly used to make this unique and beautiful deck.

Tattoos, the Star, and the Elora Tarot Project

October 20th, 2013 § 0 comments § permalink

I’ve posted about The Elora Tarot Project before. It’s a new Tarot deck and art show curated by Shelly Carter.

The show itself, which runs until November 3rd at Elora’s Wellington County Museum and Archives, features 78 original art works created by 65 different artists from the Elora, Ontario area.

Daemon Rowanchilde is one of those artists. He created the beautiful Star card in the deck, and in the video below, the first in a series by Rowanchilde called The Art of Transformation, he describes the symbolism of his card in detail.

Rowanchilde is a tattoo artist who sees the process of tattooing as a spiritual journey, not unlike the spiritual healing found in the Star card.

Take a look …

And if you’re in the Toronto area and can’t make it out to the exhibit before November 3rd, take heart. I hear that The Elora Tarot Project is coming to the Gladstone Hotel in January. I’ll let you know when I find out more.

The Elora Tarot Project

September 23rd, 2013 § 4 comments § permalink

I love group Tarot decks, and the new Elora Tarot Project, curated by Shelley Carter, is no exception.

After a Tarot trip to Italy in 2011, Carter returned home to Elora, Ontario inspired to make her own deck, or more specifically, a ‘made in Elora’ deck.

She passed the idea by some artist friends of hers, and next thing you know, the Elora Tarot Project was born.

You can see images of the cards at the Elora Tarot Project website, where you’re also able to purchase a copy of this beautiful deck.

But if you’re lucky enough to be in the Southern Ontario area, you can also see the Elora Tarot Project in person.

An exhibit of all the original artwork is running now through November 3rd at the Wellington County Museum and Archives.

Sounds like a good excuse for a day trip.

Tarot Waiting To Happen – a deck by Andrew McGregor

September 10th, 2013 § 2 comments § permalink

Tarot Waiting to Happen is a brand new, very limited edition Majors-only deck by Andrew McGregor of The Hermit’s Lamp, and it’s fantastic!!

Though it follows a traditional Tarot storyline, it does so by looking at the moments just before the situations we usually see portrayed in the cards. Times like Justice reading up on a decision before trial, or the Emperor as he’s putting on his clothes.

We even see what might have got the Hanged Man swinging.

The idea is fabulous, and I love the black and white line drawings. The only thing I could wish for is that McGregor follows this deck up with a 78-card version.

To see images of all the cards, and to order a copy of your own, visit The Hermit’s Lamp website.
