If you’re an art-loving Tarot fan in the NYC area, you might want to check out Beau Stanton’s new exhibit at the Last Rites GalleryArcane Archetypes.

Focusing on the Major Arcana, Arcane Archetypes fuses Stanton’s own visual language with symbols from Alchemy, Freemasonry, and Ancient Mysticism.

Take a look at the preview video below, and if you can, get down to the show. It runs through August 10th.

The Toronto Tarot Portal is Back!

hanged man treasure by georgic

Yay!!! The Toronto Tarot Portal is back!!!

James Wells and Andrew McGregor, two of my favourite Toronto Tarot teachers, have returned to the podcast airwaves after an almost one year hiatus.

In their latest episode, Andrew and James dig deep into Tarot Trump #12, the Hanged Man.

What does he mean in our daily lives?

Sacrifice, being stuck, getting hung up, punished, or just hanging out getting ready to change.

And what does James mean by ‘wise mush’?

Take a listen – Ego and the Hanged Man at the Toronto Tarot Portal on iTunes.

If you’re a fan of Tarot, Steampunk and Fantasy, you might want to take a look at Jamie R. Stone’s The Immortals Tarot Deck.

He’s still got a ways to go on it, but so far it’s looking good.

Watch the video below, or visit his Kickstarter project page to learn more.

Shuffle Up & Deal 3

June 6th, 2013 § 0 comments § permalink

Two of my favourite things are combined in this IndieGoGo project – independent music and cards!

Todd Lacharite, a music and art promoter from Lethbridge, Alberta is putting together Shuffle Up & Deal 3: Audio/Visual.

This is the third incarnation of his Shuffle Up & Deal series of playing card decks, and as with the other two, Lacharite has gathered 53 different Canadian artists to design one card each.

What’s a little different about this project though, is the audio aspect. Not only will a visual artist be connected to a particular card, but one of 53 Canadian bands will as well.

Take a look at the video below to hear Lacharite describe his project. And if you’re interested in learning more, visit the Shuffle Up & Deal 3 project page.

I’m looking forward to seeing how this deck turns out, but I hope Lacharite thinks about doing a Tarot deck next time around.

Take a look at this video by Teresa de Aramburu, appropriately titled Tarot Teresa de Aramburu.

In it de Aramburu combines Tarot with movement in silhouette, playing out all 22 Major Arcana from the Tarot Marseille.

The Living Tarot

May 14th, 2013 § 0 comments § permalink

The Iona Contemporary Dance Theatre from Hawaii, has reprised their 2007 production – The Living Tarot.

In the original production, audiences visited an old Victorian house in Nu’uanu, which had been transformed into a Tarot wonderland. Ten rooms of the house became 3-D contemporary Tarot cards inhabited by various members of the Major Arcana.

This time around, audiences still get to visit the magical Tarot house and meet characters from the deck, but they don’t need to actually be in Hawaii to do so.

The 2013 production of The Living Tarot is virtual and available free for everyone to enjoy.

May 3rd was the opening night of the weekly on-line performances which run through June, but you can see past week’s performances at the Iona website. You can also register there for notices on upcoming weeks.

Though I’d certainly rather be in Hawaii enjoying the show, my living room couch is good too.

A Divine Montage from Ciro Marchetti

May 11th, 2013 § 0 comments § permalink

The incomparable Ciro Marchetti has sadly decided to retire from the world of Tarot, but the incredible decks and Tarot characters he’s created will continue spreading their magic for many years to come.

The video below is a montage of some of that magic. It’s a collection of Ciro’s own favourites as first shown to his lucky audience at last month’s Readers’ Studio 2013.

Take a look. They’re beautiful!!

The Dali Museum Hosts Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project

May 2nd, 2013 § 0 comments § permalink

If you’re a Tarot lover who happens to be in the St. Petersburg, Florida area and haven’t yet seen Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project, this is your lucky day.

Now through May 12th, The Dali Museum is hosting this fabulous travelling Tarot art show curated by Stacy Engman, and their doing it for free!

Original artwork from the deck will be on display …. works by people like Yoshitomo Nara, Vivienne Westwood, Christian Louboutin, Andres Serrano, Terry Richardson, Marc Jacobs, and Karl Lagerfeld (to name just a few). It’s a truly star-studded pack of cards.

I haven’t seen the show myself yet, but I have a copy of the deck, and it’s absolutely fantastic!! It’s one of my favourite contemporary decks for sure. I recommend everyone check it out, and if you’re in Florida, go see the show!

Visiting The Dali Museum at any time would be fun, visiting it when there’s a Tarot show on would be a true delight.
