The Dali Museum Hosts Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project

If you’re a Tarot lover who happens to be in the St. Petersburg, Florida area and haven’t yet seen Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project, this is your lucky day.

Now through May 12th, The Dali Museum is hosting this fabulous travelling Tarot art show curated by Stacy Engman, and their doing it for free!

Original artwork from the deck will be on display …. works by people like Yoshitomo Nara, Vivienne Westwood, Christian Louboutin, Andres Serrano, Terry Richardson, Marc Jacobs, and Karl Lagerfeld (to name just a few). It’s a truly star-studded pack of cards.

I haven’t seen the show myself yet, but I have a copy of the deck, and it’s absolutely fantastic!! It’s one of my favourite contemporary decks for sure. I recommend everyone check it out, and if you’re in Florida, go see the show!

Visiting The Dali Museum at any time would be fun, visiting it when there’s a Tarot show on would be a true delight.

Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project

I’ve been wanting one of these decks since I first read about it last year!

Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project has been travelling around the US, but it’s back in New York City now and at the KLÜP Foundation.

Not only can you see the exhibition there, you can also get yourself a copy of the 78 card special issue deck printed up as a catalog to the show.

Curated by Stacy Engman, this project brought together an amazing collection of artists – true icons of contemporary art and design, from Karl Lagerfeld and Christian Louboutin, to Yoshitomo Nara and Vivienne Westwood.

You can see the full list of artists at the KLÜP site, and it’s impressive.

I’ve already sent my messengers to New York to get me a copy. I hope they succeed in their quest. But it’s available on line as well for those who can’t get there in person.

It’s a little more expensive than your average deck, but it’s sure to sell out soon. Don’t wait too long if you’re interested in getting one.

It doesn’t happen every day that this many renowned artists get together on one project. That they got together over Tarot is truly remarkable. I just love it.

Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project is on tour and has made it to Pittsburgh.

The Andy Warhol Museum is presenting the show through August 7th. I wrote about it last November when it was at the National Arts Club in New York City.

It looked great then and looks great now. Curated by Stacy Engman, the deck is a collective work by the very hippest of contemporary artists.

Warhol himself made it in, immortalized as Patrick McMullan’s Hanged Man.

The fashion world is well represented. The 9 of Cups is by Christian Louboutin, the Chariot by Vivienne Westwood, and Marc Jacobs created the Knight of Pentacles. Karl Lagerfeld made himself the King of Wands.

The show in Pittsburgh has an added bonus. Running in conjunction with Contemporary Magic, is the film The Velvet Underground Tarot Cards.

Directed by Andy Warhol, it documents each member of The Velvet Underground having their cards read at some super cool apartment party in 1966.

Sounds amazing.

If you’re in the Pittsburgh area, go see it.
