This is the first in a series of posts where I plan to share a few observations about specific cards.

It’s not so much meant to be me defining what a card might mean in a reading, but rather just a series of points connected to, or incorporated into a card image that might widen your own interpretation.

Six Observations about the Rider-Waite-Smith 6 of Pentacles …

  1. It’s a pentacles card and therefore describes a situation in the physical world.
  2. This 6 is connected to the Major Arcana card #6, the Lovers, and therefore incorporates ideas surrounding choice, commitment, and self-actualization.
  3. in a reading, the querent might be represented by any or all of the characters in the image – the person doling out the coins, the person receiving them, and/or the person still waiting.
  4. There is a distinct difference in the colours worn by the characters, with the two supplicants in blankets of muted yellow and blue, while the person with the coins (and the scale) is in vibrant red, and a tunic of stark black and white.
  5. The RWS 6 of Pentacles is considered a ‘stage’ card, meaning that it looks like the characters are performing on a stage.
  6. There seems to be a castle, and a forest in the background. Who do you think lives there?

Of course there’s much more to this card than these six points, but how might these particular ideas influence your interpretation of this card in a reading?

The High Priestess dressed as the Hierophant

The Moon moved into Taurus today and stays there until Tuesday.

If you look at this transit through the eyes of the Tarot, it would be like the High Priestess is dressed as the Hierophant. She’s sitting before two acolytes and sharing the secrets she usually guards.

The Moon in Taurus, or High Priestess in the Hierophant’s clothes, is a time of spiritual and emotional certitude.

There’s a sense that the truth can be explained, understood and incorporated into daily life. Rules can and should be followed.

Instead of trying to force others to recognize what you know to be certain, try using this time to simply share your emotional, intellectual and spiritual perceptions.

Celebrate the diversity of spirit in our world, while figuring out for yourself what rules, spiritual or otherwise, work best for you.

The truth is an important commodity right now.  Getting through the fog and cutting out that which no longer works is a priority.

You might be feeling a little hardcore, a little less sympathetic to sob stories and other tales of woe than usual.  That’s all right.  Sometimes it’s more important to be clear than to be sweet.

Get the job done and do it with the determination, diligence and discernment that you expect from others.

Keep in mind though that the bigger picture includes compassion.  You need not be cruel or mean to be truthful and serious.

Not everyone is as tough-skinned as you are right now, so be aware of the potential effect your words might have.

Queen of Swords Says Vote

With the Canadian federal election coming up on Monday (April 28th), I was thinking about how we might use Tarot to empower us in our civic engagement, rather than to try to predict a particular outcome.

With that in mind, here are five one or two card spreads meant to help you explore why you vote, what values you hold for the collective, and what kind of future you want to help build.

Try one of them, or all five. Or journal your answers with or without cards. If the questions get you thinking, great. If they encourage any of my fellow Canadians to vote, even better!

Spread #1: Voice & Vision
Card 1: My Voice – What does my voice or vote represent to the greater whole?
Card 2: My Vision – What future am I helping to create and/or shape?

Spread #2: Foundations & Responsibility
Card 1: Where I Stand – What grounds my values, beliefs, and hopes for my country and community?
Card 2: What Can I Do – What action can I take to positively participate and encourage these beliefs, hopes, and values?

Spread #3: Making Change
Card 1: What changes do I want to see and/or help create?
Card 2: What grounded, tangible steps can I take towards these changes?

Spread #4: Answering the Call
Card 1: What particular political and/or societal issue, value, or need is calling me right now?
Card 2: What might I do to answer the call with integrity and responsibility?

Spread #5: What I Bring to the Table
Card 1: What am I bringing to the collective through my participation?

The Moon moves into Aries today and will stay there until Sunday.

Translating this transit into Tarot cards, it would be like the High Priestess is wearing the Emperor’s clothing. She’s in scarlet and armour and is ready for battle.

The Moon in Aries, or High Priestess in the clothing of the Emperor, is a time of intensified emotions. You might feel an increased desire to shape your own world.

Rather than sitting back in stillness, this transit encourages the loosening of emotional restrictions and the conscious expression of enthusiasm and/or passion.

It might be uncomfortable at first, but allow yourself to speak out loud. Take steps forward to let people know what you know and what you love.

Try to remain objective and open-minded while acting with determination and direction. It might sound impossible, but you can do both if you try.

The flame has been ignited and there’s a new feeling floating around.  This is a day to let inspiration lead the way.

Throw out your old excuses and start something you really care about.  Passion and fire are what motivates the soul and it’s time to listen to yours.

You might not yet know what’s different but you know your old way of doing things is no longer possible.  A new spirit has been planted and you can probably feel the excitement beginning to build.

Whatever it is that moves you with enthusiasm should be your starting point.  Being true to your spirit isn’t being selfish.  It’s what makes you fully human.
