Some Familiar Images

January 3rd, 2013 § 0 comments § permalink

I was drawn into the Cracked article 5 Artifacts That Will Shatter Your Image of the Middle Ages by a picture of a strange metal, Devil-like helmet Henry VIII was said to have worn.

But it was the third item in the piece entitled The Most Confusing Book of Revelation that really caught my attention.

The section shows illustrations from the Spanish Beatus Apocalypse manuscripts, a Middle Ages commentary on the Bible’s Book of Revelation.

Though the images in the manuscripts were all created about four or five hundred years before the first known Tarot deck was made, some of them sure look familiar.

Here are a few of the Beatus images alongside cards from the Visconti, Rider Waite Smith, and Thoth Tarots.

Tarot Chic

I just love it when Tarot inspires fashion! Take a look at the video below of the Luck Winter 2013 Fashion Space by Marcio Madeira.

The whole collection is beautiful and worth seeing, but the Tarot designs start appearing at about the 4:00 minute mark, with more further in at about 6:00 minutes and beyond.

I’d just love to have some of these dresses. Lady Frieda Harris’ images from the Thoth Tarot have never looked so chic.

If you’re in London anytime between September 4th and 13th and looking for something extra fun to do, why not visit the Old Vic Tunnels and take in Carnesky’s Tarot Drome.

I wrote about it back in July, but it opens tomorrow. And since they’ve gone to the trouble of making this trailer, I thought I’d post about it again.

It looks like it’s going to be fantastic!! If you’re in London – go see it. I wish I could.

The Lovers Manifest

August 29th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

Not so long ago I posted a video of Claudia aka Reino creating the Knight of Wands from her work in progress, the Dharma Tarot.

I liked watching that video so much that I’m posting another one today of Reino at work. This time it’s the Lovers card she manifests before our eyes.

Doesn’t it make you want to get out your craft supplies! Where’s my glue stick?!

Take a look at the music video below by Sophia Balestri, with music by Mat Creedon.

It was inspired by Tarot’s Wheel of Fortune card and is part of a project they’ve been working on called The Project XXII.

Carnesky's Tarot Drome

Talk about fun with Tarot!! Carnesky’s Tarot Drome sounds incredible!!

Carnesky Productions, led by performance artist Marisa Carnesky, is putting together a Tarot spectacular in the Old Vic Tunnels below London’s Waterloo Station.

Contortionists, roller girls, rock stars – they’re all characters in a magical arcade dedicated to Tarot’s Major Arcana. The cards are alive!!

It’s up to you where you want to walk, what cards you want to interact with, and thus, what magical message you’ll be receiving.

It’s an interactive Tarot play!! In an amazing location.

Look what Carnesky’s Tarot Drome promises …

… a dreamlike journey taking you through giant penny arcades where slot machines and laughing police-men have been replaced by life-size characterisations from the major arcana of the Tarot Deck. You will attend a bizarre lecture where you learn that your hold on the present might not be what you thought it was. Your future is delivered to you in the form of a rock opera on skates.

Could you ask for more?

Carnesky’s Tarot Drome opens September 4th and runs through the 13th. You can get your tickets at the London 2012 Festival website.

Tarot As Muse: Humboldt Artists Interpret the Major Arcana

July 19th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

If you’re in Eureka, California, or anywhere nearby, and want to see some lovely Tarot art, get down to the Ink People’s Ink Annex gallery to see Tarot As Muse: Humboldt Artists Interpret the Major Arcana.

Under the co-curatorship of mask artist Kathryne DeLorme and Tarot expert Carolyn Ayres, 23 artists have created both an art show and a Tarot deck.

Twenty-two artists randomly chose one card each from the Major Arcana. They researched their cards, then reinterpreted them from their own artistic and spiritual perspectives.

A 23rd artist was chosen to create the card backs.

You can see some of the cards at the Humboldt Artists blog, but if you get to the gallery before the end of July, you can see them all in person and buy a copy of the limited edition deck for yourself.

You can also sign up for a Tarot workshop on Saturday, July 21st with Carolyn Ayers, and/or take part in the Tarot masquerade on Saturday, July 28th.

Fortunately, for those of us not in California, though we’ll miss all the in-person fun, we can still get a copy of the deck if we want. It’s available on-line at the Ink People’s website.

Sacred Geometry Tarot

July 10th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

If you’re interested in sacred geometry and Tarot, or even if you just like really nice designs on cards, the Sacred Geometry Tarot Kickstarter project might be for you.

Artist and Tarot enthusiast Katenia Keller self-published a Majors only deck back in 2009 called the Pythias Sacred Geometry Tarot.

Keller used geometric symbolism to express the 22 Major Tarot archetypes and the resulting images are beautiful.

Her new project looks to be a completion of what she started with the Pythias. She’s finished paintings for all the Minor Arcana and is ready to print the full 78-card deck.

Take a look at the video below to see images from all the cards and to hear Keller herself describe the project.

And if you’d like to donate, visit her Kickstarter page.

A Wheel & the Moon – a new short film in the works by Chris Paradis

June 21st, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

Here’s another interesting IndieGoGo Tarot-ish project …

Chris Paradis, known in the Tarot world for his Rock n’ Roll Tarot, is directing a short film called A Wheel & the Moon.

Paradis’ screenplay is adapted from the Jonathan Carroll short story called A Wheel in the Desert, the Moon on some Swings.

It looks at the story of a young gay man who finds out that he’s going blind. In his quest to avoid dealing with what’s happening to him, he discovers the real miracle of vision.

I’m not sure exactly how the Tarot is incorporated into Paradis’ adaptation, but from the sounds of it, the cards play an important role.

Tarot art from Robert M. Place’s new Tarot of the Sevenfold Mystery will be featured in the film.

And some of the perks for people who donate include Tarot readings from Paradis himself, and/or original artwork from Places’ new deck.

Take a look the Wheel & the Moon project page to learn more. I think this is going to be a fascinating film.
