#4 – The Emperor

You can expect a day of fiery energy and powerful determination.  In whatever you do today, you’re encouraged to do it with strength and creativity – in fact it would be hard not to.  Within your domain you’re the one in charge, so manifest your will.

What have you been wanting to create in your world?  Start making it really happen!

While you’re encouraged to take your power and run with it, there is a challenge associated with the Emperor.  Remember – not everyone might want to do things your way.  Everyone thinks they’re right.

Sometimes you have to give a little.  If you don’t, don’t be surprised if other people start rearing their own Emperor energy and you’re smack dab in the middle of a fight.

Masculine energy is strongly indicated with the Emperor card and issues surrounding males, especially those in authority are likely during this time.  Stay strong and true and you won’t go wrong.

Food Fortunes – A Tarot Deck Review

June 11th, 2024 § Comments Off on Food Fortunes – A Tarot Deck Review § permalink

Here’s another instalment of Georgie’s Magic Card Collection

You might call it a novelty deck, or maybe you’ll think it’s an essential oracle. Either way, it’ll likely depend on whether or not you ever need help deciding what to eat. For me, it falls somewhere in the middle … the deck in question is the delightful Food Fortunes, created by Josh Lafayette. My copy is dated 2016, and was published by Chronicle Books.

Five Points About This Deck:

  1. Fun Idea: The stated goal of Food Fortunes is to get the Universe’s help in choosing a meal. This goal is amusingly described in the booklet that comes with the deck. At least I thought it was amusing. So much so, in fact, that I actually laughed out load while reading it … but that probably speaks more to my relationship with food than anything else. In any event, I like the concept, and I liked how the concept was presented in the accompanying booklet.
  2. Bright, Engaging Artwork: As you can see in the photo above, Food Fortunes is bright and cheery. The colours are old style comic book-like, and the images are fun. And since the pictures are actually of food or drink, they’re also yummy.
  3. The Major and Minor Arcana: There’s very little that one might consider traditional about Food Fortunes’ Arcanas, except that they total 78 cards. The Major Arcana is much larger than usual. Instead of 22, there are 58 delicious looking Major cards. And though there are the customary four Minor Arcana suits, each one has only five cards – the usual four Court Cards and an Ace. Instead of the more common Cups, Swords, Wands, and Pentacles though, Food Fortunes delivers us Drinks, Mains, Sides, and Sweets. I’m good with that.
  4. Readability: Food Fortunes might not be the best deck for beginners who are looking to learn Tarot reading in a traditional sense. Having described the Major and Minor Arcanas above, you might understand why that would be. No commonly accepted Tarot rules fit this deck. But, Food Fortunes does do exactly what it says it does, and requires no training at all. You ask it what you should eat, and it gives you suggestions. Not always good ones, but clearly stated, no confusion, suggestions. You can’t say that for a lot of other decks. With more conventional cards, who knows what medieval symbology might confuse a straight ahead query like, “what side dish might go well with a main course of steak and pancakes?” Beginner or not, you can easily read these cards. It’s probably best to stick with the food theme though, I’d be less inclined to ask them about my relationships.
  5. Test Run/Sample Read Went Very Well: I was working on this review in the late morning, and feeling a little peckish, thinking of lunch but not particularly enthused about my options. What better time to put this deck to the test? I asked it, ”what should I eat?” It suggested an apple aka ’The Fallen One.’ Sounded good, but I told the Universe I didn’t have any apples (though I did eat a dried apricot in substitution), and pulled another card. This time I got the King of Drinks – Coffee! Apparently the Universe and I were on the exact same wavelength. I made another coffee and kept working on this review.

It’s been five coffees now (just kidding!!) and I’m ready to pronounce on the deck … I love it! It’s more Tarot-ish than actual Tarot, but it’s fun and really does do what it sets out to do. If you like food and cards, and food on cards, and letting cards choose your food, Food Fortunes is likely the deck for you. Bon Appetit!

2 of Cups

It looks like it’ll be a sweet day.  Open communication full of love and tenderness.  This is a day to make sure you tell the people you love how much they mean to you.

If you’re starting a romantic relationship, or in one, it can be especially delicious.  Be romantic and enjoy each other.  It’s a time of beauty, peace and innocence, the reason we love love so much.

If you’re not feeling romantic, take the energy and let yourself simply express how much you care about those around you.

It will be most powerful if you tell them one-to-one.  Let them know they’re special, it’ll make you feel great too.

It’s a wonderful day to say thank you – to your family, friends, and even your enemies.

Nostalgia and happy memories might fill your head and it’s worth remembering all the love there is around you.  Take pleasure in acknowledging it and grateful to extend it further.

Giving and receiving are two sides of the same joy.  Take pleasure in both and don’t be shy to tell people how much they mean to you.   You’ll probably be surprised by how much they love you back.

With close relationships, this is an especially important time to remember the history and strength of your time together. It’s these ties that have helped you through your most serious moments – both good and bad.

Don’t take them lightly, close friends really are special, and not as common as you might think.

Mars in Taurus – The Tower’s Lightening Strikes the Hierophant’s Throne

June 9th, 2024 § Comments Off on Mars in Taurus – The Tower’s Lightening Strikes the Hierophant’s Throne § permalink

Mars moves into Taurus tomorrow and stays there until July 20th.

Looking at this transit through the eyes of the Tarot, it’s like the Tower’s lightening has struck the Hierophant’s throne. And his acolytes are tumbling down.

When Mars moves into Taurus, and the Hierophant’s stone throne is struck by lightening, we might find that what we thought was certain, no longer seems so obvious.

Belief structures might shift, and rules that used to make sense might now feel outmoded.

Old ways of seeing the spirit, religion or traditional structures are all up for review. As could be our perceptions about who really has moral authority.

Don’t be afraid of letting tradition for tradition’s sake fall away. And if an idol or two falls with it, that’s all right too.

It might be a bit chaotic for a moment, but this is your chance to find faith in yourself. Use it as an opportunity to start being your own last word.

Moon in Leo – High Priestess in Strength’s Clothing

The High Priestess in Strength's Clothing

The Moon moves into Leo today and stays there until Wednesday.

Translated into Tarot cards, this transit would be like the High Priestess is wearing Strength’s clothing. She’s thrown off her heavy cape and is spending some time outside with her lion.

The Moon in Leo, or High Priestess in Strength’s clothing is potentially a time of emotional power. Something beautiful that’s usually under wraps can finally be revealed.

The silence is broken. Quiet wisdom and passion can be united. During this time, it might be difficult to keep your ideas to yourself. But why should you?

Try finding an outlet for plans you’ve been sitting on? This is an opportunity to shine if you’re not over-burdened by self-consciousness.

It might feel a little uncomfortable at first, but letting your wilder side out right now could be positive. The sun isn’t always shining. Take advantage of it when it does.

Celebrate with enthusiasm!  Today is for fun and sharing. Friends are at the forefront, especially the ladies in your life.

Good times, good friends, good drink – it could be a pretty excellent day.  Don’t be afraid to be happy and remember to let people know how much you like them.

Take delight in music, poetry, painting – this is a time of inspiration and creativity.  Social interaction with others will be invigorating and fruitful.

Let yourself get carried away by laughter and joy.  Seek out the beautiful within yourself and those around you.  You won’t be disappointed if you do.

Back On Instagram

It’s been a few years, but I’m back on Instagram. I never actually left, I’d just stop posting. But now I’m back and doing an ongoing series called Tarot Sightings – Toronto.

It’s pretty well a Tarot Card of the Day type thing, but instead of pulling a card from a deck (like I do for the Cards of the Day on this blog), the cards described come from Tarot symbol sightings I make on my wanderings around Toronto.

While walking around the city, I keep my eyes open for Tarot symbols, or card archetypes. I’ve been doing this for years with graffiti, but for this project I’m watching for Tarot motifs in anything I might see. It could be tomato plants on a rooftop, gas meters on a house wall, or some graffiti image that brings Tarot to mind.

Using a graffiti image as an example … my post from 6/2/24 shows a picture of a woman holding a cup. That image is on an electrical box at an intersection. In the post I declared the woman a Princess of Cups at a Crossroad with the Tarot message that “things might be changing, with new places, new friends … but as busy as it gets, remember to take care of yourself. Stay kind, curious, and hydrated’

The point was to put the Tarot character into a context for that day’s message. You do the same thing in an actual Tarot reading where there’s not only the traditional definition of the card to consider, but also its context within a spread, and/or through what question had been asked of it.

In Tarot Sightings, I’m also thinking about the traditional definition, how it’s expressed, and where it’s located.

By putting these ideas together in a quick sentence or two (or three), the day’s card, or tarot archetype’s message becomes specific to that day, locale, weather, or whatever. It’s like using a constantly evolving deck to offer a Tarot message from various perspectives around the city.

Anyway … this post has tuned out to be much longer than I had envisioned. I just wanted to let everyone know that I’m back posting on Instagram and what Tarot Sightings Toronto is meant to be.

#12 – The Hanged Man

This isn’t the day for action.  It’s time to slow down and take a close look at what’s been going on. And if you can do it from a different perspective – great!   Choose a comfortable place to relax and review what you’ve been up to.  It might seem like a sacrifice, but it’s well worth it.

Are there patterns in your life that seem to be becoming more obvious than usual? This is a wonderful time to pay attention to how you’re life’s been going these last three months or so.  Does it remind you of another time – maybe 12 years ago?

Look carefully at any people, places or things from your past (or that remind you of the past) that might unexpectedly appear. They might be highlighting particular areas in your life you’re repeating. Is it a repetition you’re happy with?

After you’ve done some review, start thinking about where you want to go next.  Your old ways are almost over.  Think about the new patterns you want to develop – you’ll be ready to start them soon enough.  For now, relax, review and let yourself imagine?
