#0 – The Fool

This is a great day to take the leap and do something different.  It might seem crazy and you have no idea how it’s going to turn out, or maybe even how you got on this path in the first place, but here you are.  It’s time to make your move and do so without fear.

The Fool card isn’t telling you to be an idiot, but rather to stop double thinking yourself all the time and worrying that every single thing is in order before you can make a move.

Life isn’t really that logical.  There’s no way to prepare for all eventualities, no matter how smart you are.  Do what you can and let the universe take care of the bigger story.

Moon in Capricorn – High Priestess in the Devil’s Clothing

High Priestess dressed as The Devil

The Moon moves into Capricorn today and will stay there until Sunday.

If you were to describe this transit using the Tarot, you might say that the High Priestess is wearing the Devil’s clothing. The virginal goddess has gotten downright beastly.

The Moon in Capricorn, or High Priestess in the Devil’s clothing, is a period of potential internal conflict. The physical world might seem to draw you away from what you typically believe to be right.

You might feel driven or compelled by behaviours and attitudes that go against the grain of your morality. It could be liberating or disturbing, depending on your secrets.

Whatever’s going on though, don’t be too hard on yourself. Get obsessions out of your system, and learn what you can about yourself while you do so.

You should be ready to move on soon. There’s nothing wrong with a little focused physicality. Just don’t get stuck.

#2 – The High Priestess

This is a good day to give your spirit some serious attention.  Take a little time by yourself to think about what it is that you believe.  What do you think of the world and your place in it?  What ultimately gives your life meaning?

It’s also a good time right now to pay attention to the messages other people have been sending you.   Let yourself absorb the world around you without feeling the need to jump in right away and take action.  This is a better time to sit and receive than to act.

Observe, listen and think about what it is you’re doing.  Through reflection you’ll start to see all sides.  Through this wider perspective you’ll find the priorities and direction that can help you on your path.

The Elora Tarot Deck – a tarot deck review

The Elora Tarot Deck

Our next pull from Georgie’s Magic Card Collection is the Elora Tarot Deck. It was curated by Shelley Carter, and published in 2013.

5 Points About This Deck

  1. Compilation Deck: The Elora Tarot is a compilation deck, ie. a deck created by multiple different artists. In this case, Shelley Carter gathered sixty-five artists from the Elora, Ontario area, to create a 78 card deck.
I like compilations decks. Different artists bring different perspectives to the cards. Some are traditional, some completely novel, and others are somewhere in between. All those differing perspectives shake things up, forcing us to abandon by-rote interpretations, and to look a little more carefully at the actual images before us.
  2. Artwork: With 65 different artists, this deck is definitely eclectic. And I love it. From photography to ceramics, oil painting to collage, watercolour, stained glass, sculpture, computer programs … so many different mediums. (ha ha – ‘mediums’, get it?) As a little gallery of Ontario artists from 2013, it’s amazing. As a Tarot deck, it’s amazing too.
  3. Card Size: The cards in the Elora Tarot are large – about 5.5X3.5”. Though they might not be as easy to shuffle as some smaller cards might be, they give plenty of room to show off all the beautiful artwork. I’m glad they made these cards big.
And while we’re talking about card size, I just want to mention the box the cards come in as well. It opens from the front with a velcro tab, and allows you to insert (or remove) the cards from the long side of the box, rather than the short. It might sound like a silly thing, but I really like it.
  4. 4 of Pentacles: Not to ignore the other cards in the deck (I like so many of them), but I thought I’d mention the 4 of Pentacles, aka, Quest for Stability in particular. I mention it not only because I like it, but to give a shout out to its designer, Andrew McGregor, my friend, and owner of Toronto’s fabulous metaphysical shop – The Hermit’s Lamp. (I just wrote about the shop the other day)
  5. The Happy Squirrel: Okay, so I’m going to single out one more card – The Happy Squirrel. Though not part of the original Tarot arcana, The Happy Squirrel was made famous in a Simpsons’ episode long ago (season 6, episode 19 – Lisa’s Wedding). Since then, it’s found its way into a number of Tarot decks, and I’m always happy to see it.

Love Love Love this deck … it’s gorgeous and thought provoking.

Queen of Swords

The truth is an important commodity right now.  Getting through the fog and cutting out that which no longer works is a priority.

You might be feeling a little hardcore, a little less sympathetic to sob stories and other tales of woe than usual.  That’s all right.  Sometimes it’s more important to be clear than to be sweet.

Get the job done and do it with the determination, diligence and discernment that you expect from others.

Keep in mind though that the bigger picture includes compassion.  You need not be cruel or mean to be truthful and serious.

Not everyone is as tough-skinned as you are right now, so be aware of the potential effect your words might have.

Moon in Sagittarius – High Priestess in Temperance’s Clothing

The High Priestess dressed in Temperance's Clothing

The Moon moves into Sagittarius today and will be there until Friday.

Looking at it through the eyes of the Tarot, this transit is like the High Priestess is wearing Temperance’s clothing. She’s dressed like an angel.

The Moon in Sagittarius, or High Priestess in Temperance’s clothing, indicates a time when intellect, practicality, emotions and passion can work together in relative ease.

What’s normally only an idea might find its way to becoming real. Even-tempered inspiration and emotional playfulness can create what look like miracles.

Take this time to bring your emotions in line with your passions. And play with your most serious ideas. It’s in combining the unexpected that you’ll likely find gold.

Ace of Cups

Emotional renewal is the name of the game today.  A new way of feeling about something and/or somebody is about to emerge.  Perhaps you’re feeling it already – it’s like that first hint of spring or when a magnolia tree finally blossoms after a long cold winter.

Joy and hope are in the air and accessible to you.  Throw away any gloom you’ve been dragging around and wake up to the inspiration of positive emotions.  There’s a sense that anything can happen and it’s probably going to be good. Be receptive to the love that’s around you and give it back in kind.

4 of Swords

Relax, stay calm and maybe even sleep on it.  There’s been a lot on your mind lately, and some of it has been quite heavy.  You need to slow down and reconnect with yourself.

Meditate on the changes you want in your life.   Figure out where your strengths lie and take that route to your goal.  It wouldn’t hurt to even reconsider the goal.  Are you sure you still want it?

And don’t forget your spirit.  Without it, the mental world can be pretty bleak.  Trust your dreams and keep in touch with your soul.  Make a truce with yourself – life isn’t always a battle.

A new sense of self and perspective on the world are available.  But you have to be quiet and still to find them.  Take today to figure it out.  You’ll be stronger in the long run.

Bookmarks

The Tarot Room Bookmarks

About 22 years or so ago, when I first opened The Tarot Room, I was looking for ways to advertise. The goal was to try something that wasn’t too expensive, and also not too weird. Ads for Tarot and Psychic readings can be both shady and cringe inducing (though I’m often fond of the graphics and really really want a neon Tarot Reader sign for my window).

But anyway … I decided on bookmarks. Not sure why, other than that I read a lot and always need one myself. They were also fairly cheap. I drew the picture for it myself (a stylized Empress in the RWS vein), and think I spent about $200 to print up 1000 or 2000 copies, I don’t remember exactly. There were a lot. But I liked them, and still had hope.

My next step was to get them distributed around the city. I hired a local postering company to get them into various cafes and bars around town, especially in my neighbourhood. Then I waited.

You’ve probably guessed already … my bookmark idea did not achieve its goals. I got zero business. In fact, I got only one call for all my effort and expense. It was in the middle of the night by some drunk guy (or at least he sounded drunk), asking me if I looked like the woman on the bookmark. I told him that I did not.

There’s no moral to this story, except that maybe bookmarks in bars and cafes are not good advertising tools for Tarot readers, or at least not for me. I’m telling this sad (or is it pathetic) story only because I just came across a dusty box filled with bookmarks … hundreds of them. Anybody want one?
